Manufacturing Systems Manufacturing System: A set of machines, tools, materials, and workers
arranged for producing goods. Objectives include productivity, quality, and efficient resource usage.
Types of Manufacturing Systems: Job Shop, Batch, Mass, Continuous, Flexible Systems. CIM
(Computer Integrated Manufacturing): Integration of CAD, CAM, robotics, and automation to
improve efficiency. Unit 2: Plant Layout & Material Handling Plant Layout: Physical arrangement of
machines and equipment to ensure smooth workflow. Types: Process layout, Product layout,
Fixed-position layout, Cellular layout. Material Handling: Movement, storage, control, and
protection of materials. Equipment includes conveyors, forklifts, AGVs. Unit 3: Manufacturing
Planning & Control PPC (Production Planning and Control): Planning, routing, scheduling,
dispatching, and follow-up. MRP (Material Requirements Planning): Calculates materials needed
for production. MRP-II: Integrates MRP with financial and capacity planning. JIT (Just-in-Time):
Produces only what is needed, reducing inventory. Unit 4: Automation & FMS Automation: Use of
control systems (robots, CNC, sensors) to operate machinery. Flexible Manufacturing System: A
system that adapts to product changes with minimal downtime. Group Technology: Grouping
similar parts for efficient manufacturing. CAD/CAM: Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing
integration. Unit 5: Quality & Maintenance TQM (Total Quality Management): Continuous
improvement and customer satisfaction. Six Sigma: Reducing defects to 3.4 per million
opportunities. Maintenance Types: Breakdown, Preventive, Predictive. TPM: Maximizes
equipment effectiveness with autonomous maintenance.
