Question Paper
Section A: Multiple Choice Questions (1 mark each)
1. The probability of an event that is certain to happen is: (a) 0 (b) ½ (c) 1 (d) none
2. A die is thrown once. The probability of getting a number less than 4 is: (a) 1/3 (b) ½ (c) 2/3 (d) 3/4
3. A coin is tossed once. The probability of getting a tail is: (a) 1 (b) 0 (c) ½ (d) 2
4. A bag has 3 red and 5 blue balls. If one ball is taken out at random, the probability that it is red is: (a) 3/8 (b)
5/8 (c) 1/3 (d) ½
5. The sum of the probabilities of all possible outcomes of an experiment is always: (a) 1 (b) 0 (c) ½ (d)
depends on the experiment

Section B: Very Short Answer Questions (2 marks each)

6. A number is chosen at random from the numbers 1 to 10. Find the probability that it is an even number.
7. A die is thrown. Find the probability of getting:
(i) a prime number (ii) a number greater than 4.
8. A card is drawn from a pack of 52 cards. Find the probability of getting:
(i) a king (ii) a red card.

Section C: Short Answer Questions (3 marks each)

9. A bag contains 4 white balls and 6 black balls. One ball is drawn at random. Find:
(a) the probability that the ball is white.
(b) the probability that the ball is black.
(c) verify that the sum of probabilities is 1.
10. Two coins are tossed together. (a) Write the sample space. (b) Find the probability of getting:
(i) two heads (ii) one head (iii) no head.
11. A box contains 10 bulbs, of which 3 are defective. If one bulb is taken out at random, find the probability
that:
(a) it is defective (b) it is not defective.

Section D: Long Answer Question (5 marks)

12. A die is thrown twice.
(a) Write the sample space.
(b) Find the probability of getting:
(i) a doublet (ii) the sum of numbers equal to 7 (iii) at least one even number.
Answer Key & Marking Scheme
Section A:
1–(c) 2–(c) 3–(c) 4–(a) 5–(a)

Section B:
6. P(even) = 5/10 = 1/2.
7. (i) P(prime) = 3/6 = 1/2 (ii) P(>4) = 2/6 = 1/3.
8. (i) P(king) = 1/13 (ii) P(red) = 1/2.

Section C:
9. P(white) = 2/5, P(black) = 3/5, sum = 1.
10. S = {HH, HT, TH, TT}. P(two heads) = 1/4, P(one head) = 1/2, P(no head) = 1/4.
11. P(defective) = 3/10, P(not defective) = 7/10.

Section D:
12. Total outcomes = 36.
(i) Doublets = 6 ⇒ P = 1/6
(ii) Sum = 7 ⇒ 6 outcomes ⇒ P = 1/6
(iii) At least one even = 1 - (9/36) = 3/4.
