HVAC Design Formulas Reference Guide

This document provides a quick reference guide for HVAC design formulas, including calculations for cooling loads, latent heat load, ventilation, cooling coil load, tonnage, airflow, duct sizing, static pressure, and pump head. Key formulas are presented for each category, such as total cooling load being the sum of sensible and latent loads, and airflow calculations based on tonnage or cooling load. The guide serves as a concise resource for HVAC professionals to efficiently perform necessary calculations.

HVAC DESIGN FORMULAS – QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

1. COOLING LOAD CALCULATIONS

--------------------------------

Total Cooling Load = Sensible Load + Latent Load

A. Wall / Roof Heat Gain (Conduction)

Q = U × A × ∆T

B. Glass Solar Heat Gain

Q = A × SHGF × SC

C. People Heat Gain

Total = Number × (Sensible + Latent)

D. Lights Heat Gain

Q = Wattage × 1.25

E. Equipment Heat Gain

Q = Wattage × Usage Factor

2. LATENT HEAT LOAD

-------------------------------

QL = 3024 × CFM × (ωo – ωi)

3. VENTILATION (ASHRAE 62.1)

------------------------------------------

Ventilation CFM = (CFM/person × People) + (CFM/m² × Area)

4. COOLING COIL LOAD

-------------------------------
Q = 4.5 × CFM × (h_entering – h_leaving)

5. TONNAGE (TR)

---------------------

1 TR = 12,000 Btu/hr = 3.517 kW

TR = Total Load (W) / 3517

6. AIRFLOW (CFM)

-------------------------------

CFM = 1.6 × TR

or

CFM = Q / (1.08 × ∆T)

7. DUCT SIZING (Velocity Method)

------------------------------------------

Area = CFM / Velocity

Typical Velocities:

Main duct: 6–8 m/s

Branch duct: 3–4 m/s

8. STATIC PRESSURE

--------------------------------

SP_total = SP_duct + SP_fittings + SP_filter + SP_coil + SP_diffusers

9. PUMP HEAD

------------------------

Pump Head = Pipe friction + Coil loss + Valve loss + Misc losses
