The interview

1 ans Umberto Eco seems to enjoy giving interviews. In


a very spirited and joyful mood, he answers the
questions put forth to him by his interviewer, Mukund
Padmanabhan. Eco readily and truthfully answers all
the questions in the most humble and sincere manner
delving into details. He doesn’t mind sharing his
experiences with others. At no point does he display
any kind of haste to wind up the interview. In fact, he
explicitly answers all the questions giving the
interviewer a feeling of warmth and being welcomed.
He clearly elaborates that the success of his novel is a
mystery to him.
2 ans Eco humorously states that there are a lot of
empty spaces in his life. He calls them ‘interstices’.
There are moments when one is waiting for the other.
In that empty space, Eco laughingly states that he
writes an article. Then he states that he is a professor
who writes novels on Sundays.
3 ans Umberto’s writings have an ethical and
philosophical element in them. His non-fictional writing
work has a certain playful and personal quality about it.
Even his writings for children deal with non-violence
and peace. This style of writing makes reading his
novels and essays interesting and being like the reading
of most academic writings. He works are marked by an
informal and narrative aspect.
4 ans Umberto identified himself with the academic
community a professor who attended academic
conferences rather than meetings of a pen clubs. In
fact, he was quite unhappy that the people referred to
him as a novelist.
5 ans The reason for the huge success of the novel ‘The
name of the Rose’ is probably that it was a different
kind of novel as it had a highly personalized narrative
written in an unconventional style. It as a serious
detective story which probed into metaphysics,
theology and medieval history. All these topics
interested readers. The author himself was mystified
by its success and says that probably the novel was
written at the right time; it may not have been such a
success if it had been earlier or later.
