INTRODUCTION
The use of social media has become an integral part of the lives of adolescents. With the
widespread availability of mobile phones and internet connectivity, students in junior high
school frequently access platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube for
entertainment, communication, and even educational purposes. While these platforms offer
opportunities for learning and social interaction, excessive use may interfere with academic
responsibilities.
Researchers Lahiry, Choudhury, Chatterjee, and Hazra (2019) found that using social media can
be addictive, that may result to severe damage in facets of an individual’s life like academic
achievement. Meanwhile, the Philippines ranked third to the last with 23% of Filipino students
who took the test attained level 2 or higher in science which is significantly lower than the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with an average of 76% (Bautista,
2023).
Academic performance remains the most common indicator of student success. Factors
influencing it include study habits, time management, motivation, and external variables such
as family environment and digital activities. Given that adolescents are at a developmental stage
where peer influence and digital exposure are strong, understanding the role of social media in
their academic outcomes is essential.
At the Advanced Academy of Northern Philippines, Inc., teachers, administrators, and parents
have observed that some students spend several hours daily on social media. Concerns have
been raised that this behavior may affect focus, reduce study hours, and result in lower grades.
However, some students also claim that social media aids in collaborative learning and quick
access to academic resources. This raises a fundamental question: does time spent on social
media have a significant relationship with academic performance among junior high school
students?
This study aims to determine the use of social media usage on the academic performance of
junior high school learners at Advanced Academy of Northern Philippines Inc. The study seeks
to provide a deeper understanding that will help learners, educators, and educational
institutions promote responsible and productive social media use to enhance academic success.
