PLAY SCRIPT
1. Write a play script on the classroom scene of Kalam’s class V.

Setting: classroom of class V


Characters: 1. A 10 year old boy in the traditional muslim dress. (wearing a religious cap)
2. a 10 year old boy in traditional hindu dress (with a sacred thread)
3. a middle aged man dressed like an orthodox hindu- teacher
4. 12-15 boys of ten years age group – students
SCENE I
(As the curtain rises, the boys are seen sitting in the classroom waiting for the teacher. The bell
rings. A middle aged man with a book in his hand enters the classroom. All the boys stand up…)

Boys: (looking at the man) Good morning sir!


The man: (with a smile) good morning! Please sit down.
(all the boys sit down)
Teacher: (looking at the boys) I’m Murthy, your new teacher! Let us know each other.
Boy 1: (stands up) My name is Aravindan Sir! (sits down)
(teacher nodding at each boy)
Boy 2: (stands up) I’m Sivaprakasan Sir! (sits down)
Boy 3: (stands up) My name is Muttu Swamy Sir! (sits down)
(teacher stands smiling at each one)
Boy in Sacred thread: (stands up) I’m Ramanadha Sastry sir,
Teacher: (smiling) oh! Are you the son of the Priest?
Ramanadha Sastry: Yes sir! (sits down)
Teacher : next…..
Boy in the Muslim cap: (stands up) my name is Abdul Kalam sir!
Teacher: Kalam……….? (harshly) Are you a Muslim?
Kalam: (slowly) yes sir!
Teacher: (furiously) How dare you sit here!
Kalam: (looks scared) Why……….Sir?
Teacher: (loudly) How can you sit next to a Hindu boy? (kalam stands with his head down)
Ramanadha Sastry: (looking at Kalam) sir…….but …he is my friend.
Teacher : (angrily) You keep quiet! (looking at Kalam) Take your bag and go to the last bench.
(all the boys look at both of them)
Kalam: with tears in his eyes) Sir……… please….
Teacher: (looking at kalam) I said, you…. Dirty fellow …go back.
(Kalam silently picks his bag and slowly walks to the last bench and sits there.
Ramanadha Sastry looks down cast. He looks at his friend with tears in his eyes.)
Teacher: Boys…. Listen carefully. From today onwards no hindu boy should neither speak
to nor play with the Muslim boy. It’s my order.
(the bell rings…… teacher takes his book and leaves the classroom. All get up slowly from their
places and walk out. Kalam and Ramanadha Sastry remain at their places. The curtain falls down)

Setting: House of an orthodox Hindu


Characters: 1. A 10 year old boy in the traditional muslim dress. (wearing a religious cap)
2. a 10 year old boy in traditional hindu dress (with a sacred thread)
3. a middle aged man dressed like an orthodox hindu- teacher
4. a middle aged man dressed like a head priest of a temple.
SCENE – I
(As the curtain rises, the middle-aged priest is seen sitting in the big chair, the boy in the dressed
like a Muslim standing to his right and the boy in Hindu attire standing to his left. A knock sound is
followed by a man’s voice.)
Man dressed like teacher: (humbly) May I come in sir!
Man in the chair: (seriously) Please come in! (the man slowly walks in and stands in front of the
man) I’m Lakshmana Sastry, father of Ramanadha Sastry.
Teacher: (nodding his head) I know it sir!
Lakshmana Sastry: My boys told me about the classroom incident to me. Why did you do that?
Teacher: (hesitantly) Actually sir, how could I allow this dirty boy sit next to your son? So I sent
him back.
LS : (gets up from his seat) How dare you do that?
Teacher: But ….sir!
L S : just be quiet! These kids are far better than you. They have the humanity that you lack.
Teacher. (looking at the boys and turning to L S) Er….sir…. I just tried….
L S : Enough of your trials. Don’t forget that you are a teacher. You cannot poison the young minds
with the social inequality. (boys observe both LS and the teacher)
How can you differentiate between the two religions? Don’t forget that we all are human.
We must teach them religious tolerance.
Teacher: (looks down cast)
L. S : If you don’t change your mindset, you will be thrown out of this island. Is it clear? (angrily)
Teacher: (looks at LS) ur………..!
LS : (bluntly) you have done a great sin. You should be punished by the society.
Teacher: Sir Please don’t do it!
L S : you just apologize to these boys or quit the school and the island. Don’t you know that all the
people are equal in the eyes of the god?
Teacher: Yes sir! I do. Pardon me sir.
LS : (nods his head)
Teacher: (looking at the boys) Children I’m extremely sorry for my action in the classroom.
Please forgive me. From tomorrow you can be together as you wish.
Boys: (happily) it’s alright sir. (both the boys happily hug LS and leave the room)
LS: Be careful and don’t repeat it.
Teacher : I shall be careful sir. Thank for guiding me sir. May I take leave sir!
LS: OK. Thank You!
(The teacher leaves the house and the curtain falls)

SCENE I
Setting: An Indian Household
Characters: 1. a woman of middle aged. (a house wife) 2. a maid
(As the curtain rises middle aged woman is seen swabbing the floor)

woman: (stops swabbing the floor and starts thinking) What is my name?
I can’t remember….. I’m…..? how could I forget my name? In my scrubbing zeal I’ve
forgotten my name. What shall I do now?
(maid servant enters) oh there she comes let me ask her.
Look Ammai, do you know my name?
Maid: (smiling) What is it amma? What do we have to do with the names of mistresses?
You are only a mistress to us……..
Woman: What do you say when you have to talk about me to someone?
Maid: I say… The mistress of such and such a white storeyed house, ground floor means you.
Woman: Oh.. ho! Stop it.
Maid: Don’t get angry amma. How do I know? (maid goes out)
Woman: Yes, true! How can you know, poor thing. Let me ask my children. (she goes inside)
(The curtain falls down)
SCENE II
Setting: An Indian Household
Characters: 1. a woman of middle aged. (a house wife)
2. a boy of 10 years in school uniform
3. a girl of 12 years in school uniform
(As the curtain rises, the woman is seen sitting in the hall thinking seriously. Both the boy and the
girl in uniform runs to their mother)
The Boy: Amma, I’m hungry!
The Girl : Amma, Amma… what are you thinking!
Woman : My …...na………..me………!
The Boy : What is this Aamma! Please serve the food.
Women : Go and wash, I shall keep it ready. (while serving she talks to the children)
Look children, do you know my name?
The Boy : you are ammaa…
The girl : Your name is amma only.
Women : No, not this.. my name.
The girl : We know you as amma. You never told your name. Why don’t you ask Dad!
Woman : hmm… that’s a good idea.
(the curtain falls down)
SCENE III
Setting: Indian Household
Characters: 1. a woman of middle aged. (a house wife)
2. a man of middle aged (husband of the woman)
(As the curtain rises, the woman is seen serving food to the man. The husband is seen in a happy
mood )
Man: What happend dear! You look so sad today?
Woman: Look, I’ve forgotten my name.
Man: Name...........?
Woman: If you remember, will you please tell me.
Man : (laughing) what is it dear. Never happend before. you’re talking about your name today?
Woman: Please don’t laugh dear.
Man : See ever since our marriage i’ve been calling you as ‘emoyi’ you too never told me to call
by your name. What happend now. Everyone calls you Mrs. Murthy, don’t they?
Woman : Not Mrs. Murthy. I want my own name. What shall I do now?
Man : you’re an educated woman. Why don’t you see your certificates?
Woman: sure, I shall do that. I have to go to amma and nanna to get my certificates.
Man : Ok dear! Go and find them out.
(the curtain falls down)
SCENE IV
Setting: Indian Household in a rural setting
Characters: 1. a woman of middle aged. (a house wife)
2. an old man (father of the woman)
3. an old woman (mother of the woman)
4. a middle aged woman (a classmate the woman)
(As the curtain rises, the woman is seen sitting with her parents and talking )
Woman: amma, nanna , I came to find my name. Amma tell me what my name is.
Mother : What is this amma! You are my elder daughter. We gave you education and a good
household after marriage.
Woman : That I know amma. But my name...... nanna...
Father : I’ve become so old dear. I hardly remember anything now.
Mother : Don’t worry dear. (a middle aged woman enters the house) see there comes your friend.
Just talk to her. Meanwhile we take some rest.
(both mother and father move inside the house)
Woman : Hey Pramila... come. How are you.
Pramila : Hi Sarada! When did you come!
Woman : S...A...R...A...D...A........
Pramila: Hey what’s wrong with you? Why are you uttering your name.
Woman: Thank you Pramila, you’ve given my name.
Pramila : What are you saying, Sarada... the topper of our class, very talented girl....
Woman: Yes, Pramila, what you say is true. Of course I’m Sarada. Until you said
it I couldn’t remember it. What I remember is only the household work. Had I not met
you, I would have gone mad. I’m so happy now.
Pramila : Good to see you Sarada after a long time. Tell me something about your family.
(as they keep talking, the curtain falls down.)
