Tutorial-I
(UNIT-I: PROBABILITY)
1. Of the three men, the chances that a politician, a business man or an academician will
be appointed as a vice-chancellor (V.C) of a university are 0.5, 0.3, 0.2 respectively.
Probability that research is promoted by these persons if they are appointed as V.C are
0.3,0.7,0.8 respectively. (i). Determine the probability that research is promoted.
(ii). If research is promoted, what is the probability that V.C is an academician. [TL-
Applying]
2. A random variable X has the following probability function
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
P(X) k 0.1 k 0.2 2k 0.4 2k
Find (i). K(ii). Mean(iii). Variance [TL-Remembering]
3. A fair die is tossed. Let the random variable X denote the twice the number appearing
on the die: (i). Write the probability distribution of X (ii). The mean (iii). The
variance. [TL-Understanding]

4. Find the mean and variance of the uniform probability distribution given by f ( x )=
n
for x=1 , 2 ,3 , … . n . [TL-Remembering]
Tutorial-II
(UNIT-II: DISCRETE DISTRIBUTIONS & CONTINUOUS DISTRIBUTIONS)
1. Out of 800 families with a children each, how many families would be expected to
have (i).2 boys and 2 girls, (ii). At least one boy, (iii). No girl, (iv). At most two girls?
[TL-Applying]
2. Let x be the number of days until the closing process of a certain stock shows a gain
over the previous day’s closing price. Assume that x is a geometric random variable
with p=0.5, the probability of a gain in the price from on day to the next day.
(i) Find the mean and standard deviation of x.
(ii). What is the probability that more than 2 days pass before a gain in price from
one day to the next is observed? [TL-Applying]
3. Find the mean and standard deviation of a normal distribution in which 7% of items
are under 35 and 89% are under 63. [TL-Remembering]
4. In a certain city, the consumption of water (in millions of litres) follows
1
approximately a gamma distribution with λ=2 and a= of the daily capacity of that
3
city is 9 million litres of water, what is the probability that on any given day the water
supply is in adequate. [TL-Applying]
Tutorial-III
(UNIT-III: ESTIMATIONS AND TEST OF HYPOTHESIS)
1. Explain briefly point and Interval estimations. [TL-Understanding]
2. An Ambulance service claims that it takes on the average less than 10 minute to
reach its destination in emergency calls. A sample of 36 calls has a mean of 11
minutes and the variance of 16 minutes. Test the claim at 0.05 level significance.
[TL-Applying]
3. A researcher wants to know the intelligence of students in a school. He selected
two groups of students. In the first group there 150 students having mean IQ of 75
with a S. D of 15in the second group there is 250 students having mean IQ of 70
with S.D of [Link] there a significant difference between the means of two groups?
[TL-Applying]
4. Explain the terms Type I and Type II errors. [TL-Understanding]
Tutorial-IV
(UNIT-IV: SMALL SAMPLE TESTS)
1. Pumpkins were grown under two experimental conditions. Two random samples
of 11 and 9 pumpkins, show the sample standard deviations of their weights as
0.8 and 0.5 respectively. Assuming that the weight distributions are normal, test
hypothesis that the true variances are equal. [TL-Evaluating]
2. A cigarette manufacturing firm claims that its brand A line of cigarettes out sells
its brand B by 8%. If it is found that 42 out of a sample of 200 smokers prefer
brand A and 18 out of another sample of 100 smokers prefer brand B, test
whether the 8% difference is a valid claim. .[TL-Evaluating]
3. The average breaking strength of the steel rods is specified to be 18.5 thousand
pounds. To test this sample of 14 rods were tested. The mean and standard
deviations obtained were 17.85 and 1.955 respectively. Is the result of
experiment significant? .[TL-Evaluating]
4. Three samples, each of size 5, were drawn from three uncorrelated normal
populations with equal variances. Test the hypothesis that the population means
are equal at 5% level. .[TL-Evaluating]
Sample-1 10 12 9 16 13
Sample-2 9 7 12 11 11
Sample-3 14 11 15 14 16

3. Define transition probability matrix and regular matrix. [TL-Remembering]
4. Three boys A, B and C are throwing a ball to each other. A always throws the
ball to B and B always throws the ball to C; but C is likely to throw the ball to
B as to A. show that the process is Markovian. Find the transition matrix and
classify the states. Do all the states are Ergodic. [TL-Applying]
