Introduction to Computer Networks
A computer network is a system where two or more computers and devices are connected together
to share resources, exchange data, or communicate. Networking makes sharing printers, files,
internet, and applications possible. Networks can be wired (using cables like twisted pair, coaxial,
or fiber optics) or wireless (using radio waves, Wi-Fi, infrared, satellite).
Quick Revision
A network connects devices for sharing data and resources.
Can be wired or wireless.
Examples: Internet, LAN in schools.
Types of Networks (PAN, LAN, MAN, WAN)
PAN (Personal Area Network): Smallest network, covers a few meters. Example: Bluetooth
between phone and headset.
LAN (Local Area Network): Covers small areas like home, school, or office. Example: School
computer lab.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers a city or campus. Example: Cable TV network.
WAN (Wide Area Network): Covers countries or continents. The Internet is the largest WAN.
Quick Revision
PAN: Few meters (Bluetooth).
LAN: Office/school.
MAN: City level.
WAN: Internet (largest).
Internet, Intranet, Extranet
Internet: The world’s largest network connecting millions of devices globally.
Intranet: A private network within an organization (e.g., office portal).
Extranet: An extended private network that allows limited access to outsiders (e.g., suppliers
accessing company data).
Quick Revision
Internet = Public global network.
Intranet = Private internal network.
Extranet = Controlled access for outsiders.
Comparison: LAN vs WAN
Feature LAN WAN
Full Form Local Area Network Wide Area Network
Coverage Small area like office/school Large areas, countries
Speed High speed Lower speed compared to LAN
Cost Cheaper Expensive
Sample Exam Questions
Q1: Define LAN. Give one advantage and one disadvantage.
Ans: LAN (Local Area Network) connects computers in a small area like an office or school.
Advantage: High speed and resource sharing. Disadvantage: Limited to small area.
Q2: Differentiate between Internet and Intranet.
Ans: Internet is a global public network accessible to everyone. Intranet is a private internal network
used by an organization.
