Introduction to Statistics – Summary Notes
1. Definition of Statistics
Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data to assist in
making decisions or drawing conclusions. It helps to convert raw data into meaningful information for
understanding situations or solving problems.
2. Importance of Statistics
1. Helps in decision making.
2. Aids in planning and forecasting.
3. Simplifies complex data.
4. Used in research.
5. Facilitates comparison.
6. Measures performance.
3. Types of Statistics
There are two main branches:
(a) Descriptive Statistics – Concerned with summarizing and describing data using tables, graphs,
and measures like mean, median, and mode.
(b) Inferential Statistics – Concerned with drawing conclusions or making predictions about a
population based on a sample.
4. Sources and Methods of Data Collection
A. Sources of Data:
- Primary Data: Collected directly from the source through surveys, interviews, or experiments.
- Secondary Data: Already collected by others from books, reports, or online sources.
B. Methods of Data Collection:
1. Observation
2. Interview
3. Questionnaire
4. Experimental method
5. Documentary method.
5. Sample and Population
Population: The entire group of individuals, items, or data under study.
Example: All students in a university.
Sample: A subset or small portion of the population selected for analysis.
Example: 100 students chosen to represent the whole university.
6. Functions of Statistics
1. Collection of data
2. Presentation of data
3. Analysis of data
4. Interpretation of data
5. Forecasting
6. Decision making
7. Characteristics of Statistics
1. Deals with aggregates, not individuals
2. Based on numerical data
3. Collected for a purpose
4. Affected by many factors
5. Has variability
6. Collected systematically
7. Used for comparison
8. Subject to errors
