Mini Research Proposal – Part 1
Research Methods in Physiotherapy and Psychology – Master Level

Weight of Assignment
This assignment will constitute 40% of your total course grade.
You will submit the written assignment and also present it in class during Week 3.

Assignment Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to help you apply the concepts covered in Weeks 1 and 2 by
developing a clear, measurable, and scientifically testable research question and hypothesis. This task
prepares you for upcoming topics such as research design, sampling, measurement, and ethics.

Task Description
Prepare a 1 to 1.5-page mini research proposal following the structure below.

1. Topic Selection
Choose a topic from physiotherapy, psychology, or a combined biopsychosocial area. Write 2–3
sentences explaining why you selected this topic.

2. Research Question (PICO Format)


State your research question and clearly list each PICO element:
P (Population)
I (Intervention or Exposure)
C (Comparison)
O (Outcome)

3. Variables and Operational Definitions


Define all variables clearly and measurably:
Independent Variable (with operational definition)
Dependent Variable (with operational definition)
Control Variables
Optional: Moderator Variable (if applicable)

4. Hypotheses
Provide two hypotheses:
Directional Hypothesis (H■)
Null Hypothesis (H■)

5. Significance Statement
Explain in 5–6 sentences why your research question is clinically or theoretically important. Describe its
relevance, contribution, or the gap it addresses.

6. References
Include at least one academic reference formatted in APA 7th edition.

Length: 1 to 1.5 pages
Font: Arial or Times New Roman, 12-point
Spacing: 1.5
Margins: 2.5 cm
APA 7th edition for citations and references

Submission and Presentation


Written Submission Deadline: 21 December, 23:59
Submission Format: Upload to the LMS as a Word or PDF document
Presentation: You will deliver a 5-minute oral presentation of your proposal in Week 3.

Grading Rubric (Total: 40 points)

Research Question (PICO) – 10 points


Clarity, specificity, correct PICO structure, measurability

Variables and Operational Definitions – 10 points


Accuracy and clarity of IV and DV definitions, measurability, control variables

Hypotheses – 10 points
Logical, evidence-informed, clearly stated directional and null hypotheses

Significance – 5 points
Clear explanation of clinical or theoretical importance

Organization and Clarity – 5 points


Coherent writing, structure, grammar, APA formatting
