INTRODUCTION
An AC generator (alternator) is a device that converts mechanical energy into alternating electrical
energy. It operates on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. AC is widely used because it can
be easily transformed to high or low voltages, making transmission efficient.

PRINCIPLE OF AC GENERATOR
The generator works on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction:
“Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a coil changes, an emf is induced in it.”
The induced emf is:
E = NBAω sin(ωt)
Where:
N = number of turns
B = magnetic field strength
A = area of coil
ω = angular velocity
CONSTRUCTION
The main parts of an AC generator are:
1. Magnet: Provides a magnetic field.
2. Armature Coil: A rectangular rotating coil of copper wire.
3. Slip Rings: Maintain contact with rotating coil.
4. Brushes: Conduct current to external circuit.
5. Shaft: Rotates the coil mechanically.

WORKING OF AC GENERATOR
1. The armature coil rotates inside the magnetic field.
2. The change in magnetic flux induces an emf.
3. The direction of induced emf reverses every half turn.
4. Slip rings transfer the alternating emf to the external load.
Thus, AC is generated.
AC OUTPUT WAVEFORM
The output emf varies sinusoidally with time, having both positive and negative cycles.
AC Voltage Sine Wave
APPLICATIONS OF AC GENERATOR
• Power plants
• Automobiles (alternators)
• Household backup generators
• Wind turbines and hydroelectric systems
• Industrial machinery
ADVANTAGES
• High efficiency
• Low energy loss
• Easy voltage transformation
• Long-distance transmission possible
CONCLUSION
The AC generator is one of the most important inventions in electrical engineering. It forms the
backbone of modern electricity generation systems. Understanding its working principles helps us
appreciate how energy is produced and supplied to our homes.
