Medical Coding Complete Study Guide

Introduction to Medical Coding

Medical coding is the process of translating healthcare diagnoses, procedures, services, and
equipment into universal codes. These codes are used in medical billing and healthcare records.

Core Coding Systems

1. ICD-10-CM: International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification.
2. CPT: Current Procedural Terminology for procedures.
3. HCPCS: Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System for supplies, medications, etc.

Medical Terminology Basics

Understanding roots, prefixes, and suffixes is essential. For example:
- Cardio = heart
- Neuro = nerve
- Gastro = stomach
- -itis = inflammation

Anatomy & Physiology Essentials

You must know body systems: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, urinary, and
reproductive.

Common Codes Examples

ICD-10-CM Examples:
- E11.9: Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications
- J45.909: Unspecified asthma, uncomplicated

CPT Examples:
- 99213: Office visit, established patient, low complexity
- 93000: Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Coding Process
1. Review medical documentation
2. Identify key terms (diagnosis, procedures)
3. Select correct ICD-10, CPT, or HCPCS code
4. Ensure compliance and accuracy

Practice Case Study

Example: Patient visits with cough and fever, diagnosed with pneumonia.
ICD-10-CM: J18.9 (Pneumonia, unspecified organism)
CPT: 99213 (Office visit, established patient)
Certification Guidance
AAPC’s CPC exam is the most popular. It tests ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, guidelines, and
compliance.
Other certifications: CCA, CCS (AHIMA).
