Plant Respiration: Types and Processes

The document covers Chapter 5 on respiration in plants, defining respiration as the process of energy production through glucose breakdown in mitochondria. It distinguishes between aerobic and anaerobic respiration, highlighting that aerobic respiration yields more energy and occurs in the presence of oxygen. The notes also explain the process of respiration in plants, the differences between respiration and photosynthesis, and include an experiment to demonstrate CO2 release from germinating seeds.

CHAPTER 5 – RESPIRATION IN
PLANTS

Q1: Define Respiration.

A: 1. Respiration is the process
by which living things produce
energy for various life
processes by breaking down
glucose.
2. Production of energy occurs
inside the cell by breakdown of
glucose.
3. It happens in the
mitochondria (known as the
powerhouse of the cell because
it stores the energy).

Q3: What are the types of

respiration?
A: There are two types of
respiration:
Aerobic and Anaerobic

energy.

Q4: Name the kind of

respiration that gives more
energy and why?
A: Aerobic Respiration
Since there is a complete
breakdown of glucose that
occurs.
Q5: If sugar solution is kept in a
bottle in a warm place, it starts
to smell like alcohol. Why?
A: Glucose (sugar) is broken
down in the absence of oxygen
to produce alcohol.

Q6: Explain the process of

respiration in plants.
A: 1. Ultimate source of energy
– Sunlight (Solar Energy).
2. Energy stored in the plant in
the form of complex organic
matter.
3. Gaseous exchange takes
place through stomata which
are minute openings at the
surface of the leaf.
4. Also there are openings
present on the bark of trees
which remain open all the time
and help in exchange of gases.
5. Energy is released by the
oxidation of glucose. Carbon
Dioxide is also released along
with water and 674kcal of
energy.
This process occurs in the
mitochondria.
6. This energy released is
stored in the form of Adenosine
Triphosphate (ATP).
7. ATP is called as the energy
currency of the cell.
8. During aerobic respiration,
38 ATP molecules are produced
(674 kcal = 38 ATP).
9. During anaerobic respiration
(28kcal = 2 ATP).

Q7: What are the differences

between respiration and
photosynthesis?

Q8: How will you show that

carbon dioxide is released from
the germinating seeds during
respiration?
A: Aim: To show that
germinating seeds release CO2
during respiration.
Materials required:
i) germinating seeds
ii) beaker
iii) coloured water
iv) Delivery tube
v) Conical flask
vi) Cork
vii) Thread
viii) Test tube
ix) KOH (Potassium
Hydroxide)
Procedure: i) Some
germinating seeds are taken
in the conical flask.
ii) A small test tube containing
KOH solution is inserted in the
flask of CO2.
iii) Set up the apparatus as
shown in the figure.
iv) The level of water in the
delivery tube is noted.
Observation:
i) Rise in the level of water
in the test tube due to
partial vacuum created in
the flask.
Since CO2 produced during
respiration is absorbed by the
KOH.
Conclusion: This shows that
germinating seeds produce
CO2.

Q9: Define Fermentation.

A: Anaerobic breakdown of
sugar molecules to give out
CO2.

Q10: Define lenticels.

A: These are the permanent
openings on the bark of trees
which help in respiration.
