SAMPLE LETTER 2

You are Saurabh Sindhi, a student of Panchavati High School in Mumbai,

Maharashtra. Many of your peers have been complaining about the back
aches and neck pains while preparing for exams. Students often spend many
hours studying without any physical breaks to stretch or move, sometimes
even skipping meals and not consuming an adequate amount of water. All
these adversely affect physical health. Write a letter to the Editor of a
National daily explaining the issue, its causes and urging students to pay
attention to the problem before it becomes a medical condition.

SUB: PROLONGED STUDY HOURS AND RAISING HEALTH CONCERNS
Dear Mr/Ms Editor
I’m writing this to put forth my views on a seemingly not so important but actually
a very pressing issue that has been increasingly affecting the students, I’m sure, not
only at Panchavati High School, but many others across the country as well. I
expect and hope that my views will find a suitable mention in your well-read
newspaper.
With the academic pressure mounting as exams approach, a significant number of
young friends begin to complain of severe backaches and neck pains. These
problems are a direct consequence of extended hours spent studying without taking
adequate breaks.
The root causes of these health issues are multifaceted. The first reason that can be
cited is procrastination - the habit of delaying learning. Leaving for tomorrow what
can be done today eventually leads to this situation. Secondly, the intense
competition, peer pressure, stress to prove their worth to the parents and high
expectations drive students to dedicate prolonged hours to their studies before
exams. Physical activities take a complete backseat during this time. Sitting for
long periods in poorly designed study setups leads to poor posture and resultant
musculoskeletal problems. Consequently. many start skipping their meals and also
forget to consume adequate water. This not only affects their physical well-being
but also hampers their cognitive functions, making studying less effective.
It is imperative for students of all age-groups to realize the importance of
maintaining a balanced lifestyle. POMODORO TECHNIQUE can help a great
deal. Regular recreational breaks can significantly alleviate the strain on the back
and neck. Maintaining hydration and not skipping meals are crucial for sustaining
both physical and mental health.
I urge educators, parents, and the students themselves to recognize these issues
before they escalate into serious medical conditions. Schools can play a proactive
role in sensitizing students about the importance of ergonomics and regular
physical activity. Understanding and implementing the essence of the maxim
‘WORK WHILE YOU WORK AND PLAY WHILE YOU PLAY’ can help all
age-groups a great deal.
Remember: HEALTH IS WEALTH – be it physical or mental. While academic
success is important, it should not come at the cost of one's health. By taking
simple, proactive measures we can ensure that students maintain their well-being
and are better prepared to excel in their exams and future endeavours.
Hope my letter grabs your attention to this significant issue, finds a suitable space
in your prestigious newspaper and helps me in putting across my message and plea
both.
Thanking you

Yours sincerely
Saurabh Sindhi

Schools should play a proactive role in preventing health issues caused by long study hours by educating students on ergonomics and the importance of regular physical activity. They can implement programs that promote healthy study practices, such as teaching the Pomodoro Technique and encouraging frequent breaks. Schools can create awareness about the negative impacts of poor posture and prolonged inactivity, and promote a balanced lifestyle that includes adequate nutrition and hydration. Additionally, they can provide ergonomically designed study environments and schedule regular physical education sessions, thus integrating healthy practices into students' routines .

Poorly designed study setups negatively impact students' health by promoting incorrect posture during prolonged study periods, which can lead to musculoskeletal issues such as severe back and neck pains. These setups fail to encourage regular movement or breaks, exacerbating the physical strain on the students. Such environments also neglect ergonomic considerations that could mitigate strain, such as adjustable chair and desk heights and supportive seating, thus contributing to long-term health issues .

Intense competition and peer pressure exacerbate health issues among students by compelling them to overcommit to study hours, often at the expense of their health. The pressure to perform well can lead to stress, causing students to sit for extended periods without breaks, which contributes to musculoskeletal issues like back and neck pains. This environment also promotes a neglect of healthy habits such as regular meals, hydration, and recreational physical activity, further deteriorating their physical and mental well-being .

The Pomodoro Technique can help students manage study-related health issues by structuring their study sessions into shorter, more focused intervals, typically 25 minutes of study followed by 5-minute breaks. This encourages regular physical movements, preventing prolonged sitting and related musculoskeletal problems. The technique prompts students to take breaks to hydrate and possibly have small meals, thereby maintaining their physical and cognitive health. The structured approach can reduce procrastination by providing a clearer path to task completion, alleviating the pressure and stress that lead to extended study hours .

Procrastination contributes to health problems by causing students to cram for exams, resulting in extended study hours without breaks. This heightened stress and pressure can lead to neglect of physical activities and poor posture from long, uninterrupted periods of study, causing back and neck pains. Procrastination also often leads students to skip meals and consume insufficient water, weakening their physical health and diminishing cognitive function, exacerbating health issues .

Educators and parents can help students balance academic success and health by encouraging time management skills that prevent last-minute cramming and reduce stress. They can introduce and reinforce the importance of taking regular breaks, adopting techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, and engaging in sufficient physical activity. Creating awareness about the necessity of balanced nutrition and hydration can also support students' health. Parents and teachers can model and advocate for a healthy lifestyle, integrating relaxation and recreation in daily routines to prevent burnout and promote overall well-being .

Health issues such as backaches and neck pains among students during exam preparation are primarily caused by prolonged study hours without breaks. This is often due to procrastination, which leads to the need for extended study sessions right before exams. Other causes include intense competition and peer pressure, which force students to study for long hours, ignoring physical activity. Poorly designed study setups contribute to bad posture, leading to musculoskeletal problems. Additionally, students often skip meals and fail to stay hydrated, which not only affects their physical health but also their cognitive functions .

Maintaining hydration and not skipping meals is crucial during exam preparations because these factors significantly affect both physical and cognitive functions. Dehydration and poor nutrition can lead to reduced concentration, memory issues, and overall decreased effectiveness in studying. Physical health is compromised, which can exacerbate stress and anxiety levels, potentially leading to long-term health problems. Adequate hydration and nutrition ensure that students have the necessary energy and cognitive capacity to absorb and retain study material effectively .

The advice 'WORK WHILE YOU WORK AND PLAY WHILE YOU PLAY' encourages students to focus fully on their academic tasks during designated study times and engage entirely in rest or recreational activities during breaks. This practice ensures that students utilize their study periods efficiently, reducing the need for unnecessarily extended hours that compromise health. Similarly, taking time to relax and engage in physical activities during breaks prevents burnout, maintains physical health, and boosts overall academic performance by ensuring rejuvenation of both mind and body .

Ignoring health problems caused by extended study sessions can lead to chronic musculoskeletal disorders, such as persistent back and neck pains, poor posture, and even spinal complications. It may also result in enduring mental health issues like anxiety and burnout due to constant stress. Over time, neglecting nutrition and hydration can cause metabolic and cognitive impairments. These problems can affect academic performance and general life quality, hindering future educational and career opportunities .
