Introduction

Nowadays, technology is advancing by leaps and bounds due to needs, whether in

the quality of the products as well as the competition between brands.

In all sectors, it is necessary to have technological growth as well as a

continuous improvement and optimization of all processes or products that are created.

For technology to advance and with it society, it is necessary on the part of the

large industries conduct research and investments in their plants to always have

products with cutting-edge technology and higher quality.

To meet all the requirements for higher quality and optimization with technology

it is necessary to have all processes controlled and automated in order to have a

greater production and better quality.

Automation is a system where production tasks are transferred,

habitually by human operators to a set of technological elements; and it is vital

the importance of implementing it in science, it is necessary to start applying this knowledge in

a productive process to generate greater efficiency and effectiveness in it.

8

Identification of needs

Conventional warehouses have a series of problems that make the

more difficult process. It is necessary to emphasize that the chicken breeding process requires a lot of care and

the problems that are most involved are the distribution of food, and the temperature of

shed.

In the distribution process of food from conventional barns, it is handled from

manual way; that is to say the man has to be depositing the food into a feeder and

water fountain at the same time generating health problems in the people who do this work and

causing a series of stress in the birds. Now then; temperature is a very serious problem

important that must be managed properly because the south of Huila is a region in

where constant climate changes occur, causing birds to get sick easily and

in many cases cause their death.

Currently, there is a need to generate a change in this process and take advantage of the

technological advancement so great that the world presents. In this way, the intention is to bring to the

practice the knowledge learned and the talent of each one to provide a solution to it

problem; and in this way achieve the implementation of methods and technological systems that

improve production and deliver higher quality results with the same efficiency but in

shorter times and without fewer procedures.

Theoretical Framework

Shed

According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), a shed can be

a shed, a storage room, or a barn. Its design is usually very simple, as it is not sought after.

to meet aesthetic criteria, but to achieve functionality.

Automation

Julián Pérez Porto and María Merino. (2016) clarify that automation is the act and the

consequence of automating. This verb, for its part, refers to making certain actions

become automatic (that is, develop on their own and without direct participation of

an individual).

Sensor

The term sensor refers to a measuring element that detects the magnitude of a

physical parameter and changes it to a signal that the system can process. To the active element of

Nutrition

Food is a very important component of the total production cost of chicken.

Fattening. In order to support optimal performance, it is necessary to formulate the rations.

to provide these animals with the correct balance of energy, protein, and amino acids,

minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids. (Aviagen, 2009)

The use of Arduino Mega enhances management and control in poultry farms by providing a flexible and configurable platform for integrating sensors and microcontrollers. It controls environmental conditions through sensors that measure temperature and humidity, and actuates systems such as curtains and vent fans to maintain these conditions within optimal ranges. The Arduino-based system ensures precision and scalability, which are essential for adapting to varying conditions and reducing human error .

Automation in poultry farms helps improve productivity by allowing more precise control over environmental conditions like temperature and humidity, which are critical for bird health. It reduces human labor, which minimizes stress on the chickens and decreases worker exposure to harmful substances. Automated feeding and climate control systems ensure consistent and optimal conditions, reducing mortality rates and disease incidence among the birds .

Conventional poultry farms face challenges such as labor-intensive feeding processes, which can lead to health issues in workers due to exposure to ammonia gases. Additionally, maintaining optimal environmental conditions is difficult due to variable climate conditions, leading to increased bird stress and health problems. Automation addresses these issues by using sensors and actuators to maintain ideal temperature and humidity levels, and automated systems reduce direct human interaction that causes stress to birds. This leads to faster growth, reduced mortality, and less labor required .

Crucial components for temperature and humidity control in an automated poultry farm include sensors (temperature and humidity), extractor fans, gas heaters, and automated curtains. The sensors continuously monitor environmental conditions and communicate with the central control system. When temperatures exceed specified limits, extractor fans activate to expel hot air, while gas heaters can be activated to add heat as needed. Automated curtains adjust based on sensor feedback to control light and further regulate temperature. These components operate synergistically to maintain optimal living conditions .

Reducing stress in broiler chickens through automation leads to better health outcomes, as stress is a significant factor in disease and mortality. Automation reduces human-chicken interactions which stress the birds, and ensures consistent, optimal feeding and environmental conditions, leading to improved growth rates and productivity. This consistent management allows birds to utilize their energy towards growth rather than coping with stress, thereby enhancing overall productivity .

The design and implementation of a scaled model provide critical insights by allowing controlled experimentation and observations that can be directly translated to real-world applications. The scaled model uses the same sensors and control systems, such as Arduino Mega, to simulate climate control, feeding, and other processes at a smaller scale. This allows developers to test the functionality, make necessary adjustments, and ensure system reliability before full-scale implementation, ensuring that the systems are effective and applicable on a larger farm scale .

The instrumentation setup for simulating the processes in an automated broiler chicken farm includes sensors such as an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for distance measurement, an MQ-135 sensor for air quality, and a liquid level sensor with a float for water management. An Arduino Mega microcontroller is used for integrating these sensors and controlling servomotor-driven actuators. Lamps simulate temperature changes, and extractor fans control humidity and temperature by removing hot air. The project also employs rollers and canvas curtains to manage light and ventilation .

Automating broiler chicken farms leads to substantial economic benefits, including reduced labor costs since fewer workers are required for routine tasks. Automation optimizes the use of resources by ensuring precise feeding and climate control, which decreases waste and improves growth rates, leading to faster production cycles. Additionally, by reducing stress and disease in chickens, automation reduces mortality rates, resulting in higher yields and increased profitability. Short-term benefits include cost savings on labor and improvements in health management, enhancing overall efficiency .

Technology has significantly advanced poultry farming in Colombia by improving productivity and health standards. The introduction of automated systems and sensors has modernized the industry, providing more precise control of environmental conditions and reducing labor. Historically, efforts such as the national census of industrial poultry farming in collaboration with Fenavi-Fonav and the Ministry of Agriculture provided essential data for these advancements. Modern implementations include using automated feeding systems, climate control, and precise monitoring technologies which have optimized production processes .

The main purposes of developing an automated system for a broiler chicken farm are to control and optimize the process of food distribution, care, and climate inside the sheds to increase profitability and effectiveness. The proposed technologies include the use of sensors like the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for distance measurement, the MQ-135 for air quality, and a liquid level sensor to manage water. The system also employs Arduino Mega for control, interfacing with microcontrollers, and actuators developed specifically for handling curtains and extractor fans, which help manage temperature and ventilation .
