Filipino Nationalism: Early Revolts and Resistance
Introduction
As discussed in our previous lesson on the transformations under Spain, the
political, economic and socio-cultural changes led to discontent, resistance,
grievances and having a consciousness of being a separate nation among the
Filipinos. This module aims to understand and examine the causes and outcomes
of the early revolts and Indigenous peoples’ resistance against Spanish colonial
rule.
1.1. Development of Filipino Nationalism- Characteristics, Causes and Outcomes
of the early revolts and resistance of the indigenous peoples
The development of Filipino Nationalism was spread out in time from the 16th-19th
centuries, spread out in place (fragmented) and localized resistance. Among
the major causes of the early revolts were personal grievances, religious conflict,
resistance to Spanish policies (tribute, forced labor, land grabbing, among
others). These early revolts and resistance sparked the development of Filipino
nationalism. However, their efforts and struggle against Spanish rule failed due to
the following reasons: geographical fragmentation, lack of unity, language
diversity, military superiority of the Spaniards, divide and conquer strategy and
establishment of Christianity.
