Engine Alignment Work Instruction Guide
Engine Alignment Work Instruction Guide
1.0 PURPOSE
Establish the minimum requirements for alignment and assembly of engines in rotating machines.
(hydraulic systems and mechanical transmission) and thus also be able to obtain an evaluable record for
fill in the alignment calculation form for further analysis.
2.0 SCOPE
This work instruction applies to all motors in rotating systems that use mechanical couplings.
plant.
3.0 AUTHORITY
Maintenance technician: assembly, alignment, and recording of measurements before and after
alignment.
Planning: schedule the machinery downtime for the execution of the instruction, based on the
frequency required by the MP2 coordinator or by direct request from the supervisor, either by
corrective, preventive, or predictive maintenance.
Maintenance Supervisor: Validate that the procedure has been carried out correctly in time and
form, following this work instruction and evaluate the results.
Maintenance Manager: Validate that the established forms are being carried out in a timely manner.
Coordinator MP2: request the scheduled machine shutdown and file the event records.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.0.1 RUNOUT: It is defined as the degree to which a shaft or coupling deviates from its correct rotation.
It is due to an eccentricity in the coupling because of poor machining, mistreatment, and also because of a bent shaft or axis.
combination of both.
(e.g. Fig. 1.1 and 1.2)
4.0.2 TIR: (Total Indicator Reading) or Overall Indicator Reading. It is the numerical result that gives us the
indicator when measuring the point-to-point contact surface at 180 degrees around the shaft or coupling
(turning the arrow (axis)), recording the starting point as zero. The result is in MILS, or thousandths of an inch
4.0.3 ROTATIONAL CENTER: The rotational center is the imaginary axis around which an axis or a
rotating element.
4.0.4 COLLINEARITY: it occurs when 2 rotational axes coincide in a single straight line.
4.0.5 MISALIGNMENT: occurs when 2 rotational axes do NOT align in a single straight line
4.0.5 SHIMS: Metal plates with a specific gauge, specially designed for the supports.
