Motivation
Before we proceed to our next topic, I want you to get your notebooks and
try to solve the following. The first person to get the correct answer will
have a reward. But take note, do not answer in chorus. If you have

Everybody please read the objectives for our topic today.

Before we discussed our topic today, let us try to answer this problem. All
boys please read the given problem.

Problem 1. A student deposits 5,000 in a bank account which ₱ pays 6%

examples/
instances of the Interest.
new lesson
Please read the definition of Simple Interest.

Simple Interest (Is ) is the method of calculating the interest amount for lustrates Observable
#4:
a particular principal amount of money at some rate of interest. Used a range of
Simple interest is based on the 3 factors: teaching strategies that
enhance learner’s
 Principal (P) is the amount invested or borrowed. achievement in literacy
and numeracy skills.
 Simple interest rate (r), usually expressed in percent (%) (PPST 1.4.2)
 Time or term of loan (t), in years (When the term is expressed in
months (M), it should be converted to years by t = M/12.)

Finding the rate Formula

Is
r=
Pt

Finding the time Formula

I
t= s
Pr

where,
Is = simple interest
P = principal, or the amount invested or borrowed
r = simple interest rate
t = term/ time in years

Example: A bank offers 2.75% annual simple interest rate for a particular
deposit. How much interest will be earned 10,000 pesos is deposited in
this savings account for 6 months?

Step 1: Identify the given and the unknown

P = 10,000.00₱ r = 2.75% or 0.0275 t =0.5 or
6/12 (6 months)
Is = ?

Step 2: Substitute the given to the formula

Is = Prt
Is = (₱10,000.00) (0.275) (0.5)
= ₱137.50

Another example, try to solve this in your notebook. Everybody read.

A student obtains a simple interest loan to pay for one year of college
tuition. The loan amount is ₱18,000. The annual interest rate on the loan
is 6%. The term of the loan is three years.

Answer:

Step 1: Identify the given and the unknown

P = 18,000.00₱ r = 6% or 0.06
t=3
Is = ?

Step 2: Substitute the given to the formula

Is = Prt
Is = ( 18,000.00) (0.06) (3)₱
= ₱3,340

So, what is the simple interest?

What about if the interest, interest rate, and time are given but the
principal is unknown? How can we solve it? Or is it possible to find its
value? What do you think?

Example: Find P when t = 3 years, Is = 600, ₱ r = 4%.

Solution: Use the Simple Interest formula or you can derive the formula
and solve for the principal.

Solution:
Given: t = 3 years
Is = ₱600 r = 4% = .04

Find P?
Is
P=
rt

600
P=
(0.04 )(3)

P = ₱5000
Another example. Try this on your notebook.

Example: Find t when P = 5,000, I₱ s = 600, ₱ r = 4%.

Solution:
Given: P = 5,000₱ Is = 600₱ r = 4%

Find t?

Is
t=
Pr
600
t=
(5,000)(0.04)
t= 3

Let’s proceed on Maturity (Future) Value. Kindly read the definition.

Maturity (Future) Value is the amount to be paid over a period of time.

Maturity (Future) Value Formula

F = P(1+rt)

where,

F = maturity (future) value

P = principal
r = interest
t = term/time in years

Example: Find the maturity value if 1 million pesos is deposited in a

bank at an annual simple interest rate of 0.25% after a) 1 year and b) 5
years c) 3 years d) 7.5 years

(a) F = P(1+rt)
= 1,000,000(1+(0.0025)(1))₱ = 1,002,500₱

(b) F = P(1+rt)
= 1,000,000(1+(0.0025)(5))₱
= ₱ 1,012,500

Understanding interest encourages learners to manage money wisely

and avoid irresponsible borrowing.

The longer the time or the higher the rate of interest, the greater the simple
interest earned or paid, since it is directly proportional to the principal, rate,
and time.
