Marriage is a socially and often legally recognized union between two people, establishing rights and obligations

between them, their children, and their in-laws. It is a sacred covenant that binds families together and serves as the
foundation for procreation and the nurturing of future generations. In the rich tapestry of Malawian society, this
union is expressed through various forms, each with its own unique customs and significance. The main types of
marriages practiced include civil marriage, which is recognized by the state; religious marriage, solemnized by
faith-based institutions; customary marriage, which is governed by the traditions of a specific community; and the
lobola system of marriage, a vital cultural practice involving the exchange of gifts or payment from the groom's
family to the brides as a sign of respect and unity. This essay will explore the profound importance, sources, and
traditional as well as religious preparations and celebrations of marriage within the Malawian context.

In Malawi, the main types of marriages are Civil, Religious, and customary, all of which are legally recognized and
carry the same legal status under law. There are also partnerships without marriage and marriages by repute or
permanent cohabitation. Customary marriage is particularly diverse, with two prominent systems: the primary
language in matrilineal areas and the lobola system in patrilineal areas
.
Civil marriage is a marriage celebrated by a registrar in accordance with the law. People celebrate this marriage in
accordance with the law where by the marriage is confirmed by the registrar of the country so that people can get
married in a proper way.

Religious marriage is a marriage celebrated according to the rites of a religious denomination or body which may
also be registered to be legally valid. People celebrate marriages through religious denomination so that they can be
legally married.

Customary marriage is a marriage that is the most common form of marriage across all regions, governed by local
traditions and practices. Chikamwini system is common in the south and central regions. The primary requirement
is the consent of marriage guardians (ankhoswe) and the couple often lives with the wife’s family.
Lobola system is a marriage that is common in the north and southern districts like chikwawa and nsanje. This
system requires the groom’s family to pay bride price to the bride’s family in addition to obtaining consent.

Marriage has a psychological importance on their well-being in such a way that it links to happiness and peace.
Married couples mostly tend to provide emotional support to each other which reduce isolation. In Malawi, suicide
is mostly due to isolation. According to times media, in 2013, suicide cases rose due to divorce and stress. So
however, we can also say that marriage reduces suicide in a respectfully psychological manner in self-esteem and
more. Marriage is also caring sanctuary for children, providing a stable environment for them to grow up in and this
is highly valued in Malawian culture.
According to catholic social teaching marriage is a start of family and marriage is start of family and it is a
sanctuary of life promoting unity and stability within household. Family often plays a role in building a society in a
type of function called member replacement. This means that marriage is just not a union between two individuals
but a joining of two families due to the including extended relatives. This can lead to a larger support network
Marriage plays a part not only on the individual or the household, but it also plays part in the economic system in
such a way that couples may improve their financial standing by brings their resources together. Sharing resources
means also that the couple also share expenses such as living expense, housing, food, and more which reduces
financial burden on each other. However, economy and development are stable when married couples often invest
on their children’s and health. These investments lead to better economic future development due to their learning,
and this is a culture value that has been passed down over generations. And this is why development is evolving in
Malawi.

Religious sources are foundational to understanding marriage, offering not just rules, but also the underlying values
and ideals that shape marital relationships. An example of a religious source is Christianity, Islam where that the
Quran and the Sunnah (the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad) are central. The Quran (30:21)
states, "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them;
and He placed between you affection and mercy, Judaism marriages emphasizes the importance of family,
procreation, and the mutual support of husband and wife, Hinduism marriages is considered a sacred bond
(Samskara) that unites two families, not just two individuals, and is often seen as a lifelong commitment.

Traditional sources often involve a complex interplay of family, community, and cultural norms. An example of a
traditional are arranged Marriages, historically, and still in many societies today, arranged marriages are common.
Families, rather than the individuals, take the lead in selecting a spouse, Bride Price and Dowry These practices are
often linked to traditional marriage customs where the bride price, common in some African cultures, involves the
groom's family providing goods or money to the bride's family to compensate for the loss of her labor and to
establish the marriage, Wedding Rituals and Ceremonies: Traditional weddings are rich in symbolism and cultural
significance. These ceremonies often include rituals that mark the transition from singlehood to married life, such
as exchanging vows, exchanging rings, and various symbolic actions.

Civil sources emphasize the legal aspects of the union, focusing on the rights and responsibilities of the individuals
involved, as recognized by the state. Some examples of civil marriages could include legal requirements and
procedures where civil marriages are primarily governed by laws and regulations set by the government, emphasis
on Individual Choice and Consent where a key characteristic of civil marriage is the emphasis on individual choice
and consent, equality and non-discrimination where laws often promote equality and non-discrimination. This
means that the laws apply equally to all individuals, regardless of their background, beliefs, or sexual orientation.
In Malawi preparing for Marriage and marking it in a traditional way has multiple stages of process that varies
between different ethnic groups, such as the Chewa, Tumbuka and Ngoni. While in the modern days religious
ceremonies are common, but the traditional customs remain the same for involving the uniting the families of the
couples. In Malawi they also have a system of marriage which are. matrilineal and patrilineal system.

Negotiation by elders is the first process to be done before preparing for Marriage in Malawi, during this time the
groom’s family which is led by his uncle and visits the bride’s parents to propose marriage. Where the bride’s uncle
will take time to consult with her before replying. (Mufasa Malawi, 2025).

Bride price (Lobola): Lobola it’s when the man negotiates during the proposal stage, in tribes like Ngoni and
Tumbuka they practice patrilineal system. In the northern region, they practice Patrinual system groom to the
bride’s family. Lobola is paid in form of cattle or sometimes cash equivalent to the number of cattle charged. The
minimum number of cattle for a wedding to take place is three (Malawi plus,2022). In the matrilineal system the
payment is called Chiongo, a token of appreciation to the bride family. This is commonly done by the Chewa in the
centeral region (National news, 2024).

Homestead trial (Chikamwini/Chitengwe): These preparations are commonly done by the Yao, Lhomwe, Nyanja
and Chewa. In matrilineal system the groom may perform some trial service by staying at the bride family and
work for a period of time, this is called Chikamwini, or the bride can also choose to stay to the groom’s family and
work for a period this is called Chitengwe. (Malawi plus, 2022)

In Malawi, preparation for marriage combines both cultural traditions and religious practices. Traditionally, the
process begins with chinkhoswe (engagement), where the families of the bride and groom meet to formalize the
relationship and exchange symbolic gifts such as cloth or chicken (Malawi Plus,2023). During this stage, the couple
receives guidance from elders or alangizi on marital roles, respect, and responsibilities. In Christian communities,
couples also attend premarital counseling sessions known as chilangizo, where church leaders teach about love,
faithfulness, and communication (1Library, 2021). Similarly, in Muslim communities, preparation involves Nikah
arrangements, including agreement on mahr (dowry), consent of both partners, and witness presence (Malawi
Muslims, 2020). This religious marriage is taken a covenant because GOD is the one who blesses the marriage and
the one who chooses a life partner for each person (Genesis 2:24) for a man should live his parents and unite with
his wife and these two becomes one.

Marriage ceremonies are marked differently across religions but share common values of unity and celebration.
Christian weddings are usually conducted in churches, where vows are exchanged before a pastor or priest,
followed by a community reception (Malawi Plus,2023). Muslim marriages are marked by the Nikah ceremony,
where the marriage contract is signed and later celebrated modestly according to Islamic teachings (Nyasa Times,
2022). Traditional elements, such as dances and family blessings, often accompany both religious weddings,
symbolizing the merging of two families (Visit Malawi, 2022). Through these religious and cultural practices,
marriage in Malawi is seen not only as a union between two individuals but also as a communal and spiritual
commitment (Mathew 19:4-6).

Marriage in Malawi is an important part of life that brings families and communities together. Both traditional and
religious ways of marriage teach respect, love and commitment. These practices help couples build strong families
and keep good values in society.
