Tutorial 1 - pg 1 - 5 (27 August)
Read pages 1 - 5 of the notes and answers the Questions 1 - 8 below
Questions
1. What is the driving force for mass transfer and what are the factors that influence the
rate at which mass transfer occurs?
2. Mass transfer processes can take place in a gas or vapour or in a liquid and it can
result from two different mechanisms, name and explain each one shortly.
3. For separation processes the difference in a particular physical property is used to
achieve the separation needed. What are the properties used for (a) fractional
distillation and (b) liquid-liquid extraction.
4. State Fick’s Law, including the assumptions made, the equations use and a description
of all the variables involved.
5. What are the assumptions made in a process referred to as one of equi-molecular
counter diffusion? Show how these assumptions are used to derive Equation 4. Equi-
molecular counter diffusion may be assumed in fractional distillation processes, what
are the assumptions made?
6. How does the mass transfer rate change if circulating currents or eddy currents are
present in the mass transfer process? (Looking at the work from Process Fluid
Dynamics – how does the flow pattern; Laminar or Turbulent; fit into this answer?)
7. State Dalton’s Law. Using Dalton’s Law of partial pressures show how pressure,
concentration and mole fractions are related. Write the molar flux as (a) a function of
concentration; (b) a function of partial pressure and (c) a function of mole fraction.
8. Assuming equi-molecular counter-diffusion define the mass transfer coefficient
associated with each different driving force: (a) concentration; (b) partial pressure and
(c) mole fraction. (Include the units for each coefficient)
