Chapter 5 ICT
5.1 Microprocessor-controlled Devices
5.1.1 Effects of Using Microprocessor-controlled Devices in the Home
Microprocessor-controlled devices impact our lifestyle, leisure time, physical
fitness, data security, and social interaction in both positive and negative
ways.
Types of Devices:
Labour-saving devices:
o Automatic washing machines, robotic vacuum cleaners, microwave
ovens, bread-making machines, smart fridges, automatic
dishwashers.
Other devices:
o Alarm clocks, televisions, central heating, home entertainment
systems, mobile phones, and tablets.
Impact on Lifestyle, Leisure Time & Physical Fitness:
Advantages:
o More leisure time for hobbies, shopping, and socializing.
o Control devices remotely (e.g., using smartphones for ovens,
washing machines).
o Smart fridges help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
o Automated alarms increase security.
Disadvantages:
o Risk of an unhealthy lifestyle due to less physical activity.
o Dependence on devices may reduce household skills.
o Potential cybersecurity threats with internet-connected devices.
General Advantages & Disadvantages of Microprocessor-controlled
Devices:
Advantages:
o Energy efficiency (auto-off feature).
o Easier to use via programming (e.g., QR codes for automatic oven
settings).
Disadvantages:
o Increased waste due to devices being discarded instead of repaired.
o Complexity for technophobes.
o Energy waste from devices left on standby.
Data Security:
Internet-connected devices pose risks like hacking, leading to loss of
personal information (e.g., hacking smart fridges, heating controllers).
Importance of using strong, unique passwords and software updates.
Social Interaction:
Positive:
o Easier to make friends and communicate online (e.g., chat rooms,
VoIP).
o Cost-effective communication.
Negative:
o Social isolation and less face-to-face interaction.
o Cyberbullying and changes in behavior online.
5.1.2 Monitoring and Controlling Transport
Microprocessors are widely used in transportation systems, including:
Traffic monitoring, congestion zone management, automatic number
plate recognition (ANPR), traffic light control, air traffic control, and
railway signaling systems.
Smart Motorways & Road Systems:
Advantages:
o Adapt to traffic conditions, reducing congestion.
o Efficient transport networks.
o Automatic penalties for traffic violations (ANPR).
Disadvantages:
o Hacking risks disrupting traffic.
o System failures could halt transport.
Rail & Air Network Control:
Advantages:
o More efficient transport with fewer accidents.
o Computerized scheduling increases efficiency and safety.
Autonomous Vehicles:
Autonomous Cars:
o Use sensors, cameras, actuators, and microprocessors to navigate.
o Advantages: Fewer accidents, more efficient, reduced traffic
congestion, and stress-free parking.
o Disadvantages: High costs, hacking risks, reluctance to adopt, and
concerns about job loss in transport sectors.
Autonomous Trains:
o Use of LiDAR, sensors, and cameras for control.
o Advantages: Increased punctuality, lower costs, and safer
operations.
o Disadvantages: Hacking risks, high capital costs, and potential
passenger behavior issues.
Autonomous Aircraft:
o Similar use of sensors and microprocessors to control flights.
o Advantages: Improved passenger comfort, reduced running costs,
and fewer accidents.
o Disadvantages: Security concerns, software glitches, and
passenger reluctance.
5.2 Potential Health Problems from Prolonged Use of IT Equipment
Common health risks from prolonged IT use include:
1. Back & Neck Strain:
o Caused by poor posture during long periods at the computer.
o Prevention: Use adjustable chairs, footrests, and maintain proper
posture.
2. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI):
o Caused by repetitive use of keyboard or mouse.
o Prevention: Use wrist rests, ergonomic keyboards, and take
breaks.
3. Eyestrain:
o Caused by prolonged screen time or improper lighting.
o Prevention: Use anti-glare screens, proper lighting, and regular
eye exams.
4. Headaches:
o Triggered by poor lighting, screen reflections, or flickering screens.
o Prevention: Adjust lighting, use anti-glare screens, and take
breaks.
5. Ozone Irritation:
o Caused by laser printers.
o Prevention: Use inkjet printers or house laser printers in
designated rooms with proper ventilation.
By maintaining proper posture, taking breaks, and using ergonomic equipment,
many of these risks can be reduced.
