📘 INFORMATION SHEET 3-1

Network Operating System (NOS)

Learning Objectives
After reading this information sheet, learners should be able to:

1. Define a Network Operating System (NOS) and its functions.

2. Identify the different types and examples of NOS.
3. Describe the key features and components of NOS.
4. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of NOS.
5. Differentiate between peer-to-peer and client-server network models.

1. Definition of Network Operating System

A Network Operating System (NOS) is specialized software designed to manage, control, and
coordinate networked computers and resources.
It enables multiple computers to communicate, share files, printers, applications, and other
network services efficiently.

A NOS provides the platform for network connectivity, allowing computers to operate both
independently and collaboratively across a Local Area Network (LAN) or a Wide Area Network
(WAN).

2. Purpose and Function of NOS

A NOS manages both hardware and software resources across a network.
Its main purposes include:

 Centralized Management: Controls and monitors network operations from a central

server.
 Resource Sharing: Enables sharing of files, printers, and storage devices.
 User and Group Management: Allows administrators to create, modify, and delete user
accounts and permissions.
 Network Security: Provides authentication, access control, and encryption.
 Communication Services: Supports email, file transfer (FTP), and remote access.
 Reliability and Fault Tolerance: Maintains data integrity and minimizes downtime.

3. Types of Network Operating Systems

A. Peer-to-Peer NOS

 Every computer acts as both a client and a server.

 There is no centralized control.
 Suitable for small networks (less than 10 computers).
 Example: Windows 10/11 Home Network, Linux Ubuntu Workgroup.
B. Client-Server NOS

 A dedicated server manages all network resources.

 Provides centralized control, security, and data management.
 Suitable for medium to large organizations.
 Example: Windows Server 2019/2022, UNIX, Linux Server, Novell NetWare.

4. Common Examples of Network Operating Systems

NOS Name Developer Type Description / Features

Microsoft Windows Offers Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, file

Microsoft Client-Server
Server sharing, and user authentication.

AT&T Bell Multi-user / Powerful and stable; often used in enterprise

UNIX
Labs Client-Server servers.

Linux (Red Hat, Ubuntu Client-Server / Free and customizable NOS; supports various
Open Source
Server, CentOS) Multi-user server roles.

Early NOS known for excellent file and print

Novell NetWare Novell Inc. Client-Server

5. Key Features of Network Operating Systems
1. Multi-User Access – Supports simultaneous connections from multiple users.
2. Security Services – Provides authentication, authorization, and data protection.
3. File and Printer Sharing – Allows networked users to access and share resources.
4. Communication Protocols – Uses TCP/IP, FTP, HTTP, etc. for communication.
5. Network Management Tools – Includes monitoring, troubleshooting, and configuration
utilities.
6. Scalability – Can handle increased users and devices efficiently.
7. Data Backup and Recovery – Ensures data safety through redundancy and fault
tolerance.

6. Advantages of Network Operating Systems

 Centralized management and control
 Easier sharing of files and printers
 Enhanced network security
 Reliable and stable performance
 Supports scalability for future growth

7. Disadvantages of Network Operating Systems

 High setup and maintenance costs
 Requires skilled network administrators
 Server failure may affect the entire network
 More complex to configure and maintain

8. Comparison: Peer-to-Peer vs. Client-Server NOS

Feature Peer-to-Peer Client-Server

Control Distributed among peers Centralized in a server

Cost Low-cost Expensive

Security Limited High

Performance Slower in large networks Faster and more stable

Scalability Difficult to expand Easy to expand

Example Windows 10 Workgroup Windows Server 2022

9. Examples of NOS Functions in Action

 File Server: Manages shared documents for office users.
 Print Server: Controls access to shared printers.
 Mail Server: Handles company email and communications.
 Web Server: Hosts websites and intranet services.
 Database Server: Manages structured organizational data.

Summary
A Network Operating System (NOS) is vital in managing, securing, and optimizing a network
environment.
It enables effective communication, resource sharing, and centralized control for both small and
large organizations.
Understanding NOS helps ICT professionals design and maintain reliable and secure network
infrastructures.
