Functions of Community

1. Production, distribution & consumption


•Production – creation and/or gathering of goods and
services.
•Distribution – when products are ready and are all ready to
be sold.
•Consumption – when these goods are being used by
members of the community.
•No community can survive if it does not provide some way
for people to make a living.
2. Socialization
• Your association with others – whether people of
your age, younger than you or those who are way
older than you – is called socialization.
• This is the way for children to learn what they will
need to know to be adults; for workers to develop the
knowledge, skills & abilities; for migrants, to learn “how
we do things here.”
• Community involvement influences a
children’s socialization, including physical
factors, economic factors & social &
personal factors.
3. Social Control
•Certain rules & standards in
society that keep individuals
bound to conventional standards
as well as the use of formalized
mechanisms.
•In our respective homes, our
parents have imposed rules. If
you or your sibling fails to follow
those rules, you will be punished.
This is called “control.”
4. Social Participation
•It means the involvement of intended
beneficiaries in the planning, design,
implementation and subsequent
maintenance of the development
intervention.
• Example: elections, Brigada Eskwela &
when Brgy. organizes a disco to raise
funds during annual fiesta
5. Mutual Support
• The community enables its
members to cooperate in order to
accomplish tasks too large or too
urgent to be handled by a single
person.
• Example: Supporting a community
hospital with tax dollars & donations.

& COMMUNITY PROCESSES.
1. Who has the authority to make
decisions?
• If the home does not have a
clear person of authority, its
members tend to be
undisciplined.
• In our brgy or town, we
elected into office for this
purpose.
2. Who controls/influences resources?
• In the house, your mother holds
your father’s salary. It follows then
that your mother holds & controls the
money, but your father has influence.
• “WHO CONTROLS YOUR FAMILY’S
RECOURCES?
3. Who is not part of the decision-
making process that ought to be?
• if your mother & father
discuss about something, you
are somehow allowed to talk
because you are part of the
family.
4. How to build power both within &
outside the community?
• barangay and town have the
same people or agencies that
they link with, in order to make
their programs & projects
successful, this is what we
called “linkages.”
