Understanding and Using an Oscilloscope
Objective
The objective of this experiment is to understand the working principle of an oscilloscope, measure
electrical signals, and analyze waveforms such as sine waves and square waves.
Equipment Required
• Oscilloscope (Digital/Analog)
• Breadboard
• Function Generator (Capable of generating sine, square, and triangular waves)
• Power Supply
• Connecting Probes
• Resistors and Capacitors
Theory
An oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument that allows observation of varying signal voltages,
usually as two dimensional plot of one or more signals as a function of time. It is used to measure
properties like amplitude, frequency, time period, and phase shift of Alternating Current signals.
Key Parameters Measured
1. Amplitude – The peak voltage of the waveform.
2. Frequency – The number of cycles per second (Hertz).
3. Time Period – The duration of one complete cycle.
4. Phase Shift – The time difference between two signals.
Experimental Procedure
Step 1: Setting Up the Oscilloscope
1. Turn on the oscilloscope and select DC coupling mode.
2. Connect the oscilloscope to the function generator using connecting probes
3. Set the function generator to produce a sine wave with a frequency of 1kHz
Step 2: Observing a Sine Wave
1. Set the function generator to output a sine wave at 1 kHz.
2. Observe the waveform.
3. Gradually increase the voltage to 10V in steps and record the waveforms.
4. Measure peak-to-peak voltage and time period from the oscilloscope screen.
Step 3: Observing Square
1. Change the function generator to output a square wave.
Observations
• When the function generator was set to produce a sine wave, the oscilloscope displayed a
smooth, periodic waveform with a consistent amplitude and frequency
• For the square wave the oscilloscope showed a waveform with sharp transitions between high
and low voltage levels, forming a rectangular pattern
Results
• The oscilloscope accurately displayed the voltage variations.
• The measured amplitude and frequency matched the function generator’s output.
Conclusion
This experiment provided a comprehensive introduction to the use of an oscilloscope. We gained
practical experience in measuring voltage, frequency and phase difference, as well as observing
different types of waveforms .The results confirm that an oscilloscope is a reliable tool for
measuring voltage, frequency, and signal shape, making it essential in electronics engineering.
Drawbacks
Using old materials and equipment’s.
Shortage of lab technicians.
