Section:___________________
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities
in two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in two variables and linear
function.
Learning Competencies: The learner
i. Illustrates rational algebraic expressions;
ii. Simplifies rational algebraic expressions;
CHAPTER 2: RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
LESSON 1: SIMPLIFYING RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
A rational expression is defined as a ratio of two polynomials P and Q, written in
P
the form , where Q ≠ 0.
Q
The restriction that Q or the denominator cannot be equal to 0 means that any
number or expressions divided by 0 is undefined.
EXAMPLE 1:
5x
1. For what values of x is undefined?
2−x
y +2
2. For what values of y is undefined?
y+ 7
SOLUTION:
To find the restricted value of the rational expression, solve the equation Q=0.
1. Since 2−x =0 , then x=[Link], the expression is undefined when x=2.
5x 5x 5x
= = =undefined
2−x 2−2 0
2. Since y +7=0 , then y=−7. Therefore, the expression is undefined when y=−7.
y +2 y +2 y +2
= = =undefined
y+ 7 −7+7 0
EXERCISE 1:
Determine the value of x that will make the rational expression undefined.

FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS
For polynomials P, Q, and R, when Q ≠ 0 and R ≠ 0.
P P.R

Q Q.R
Example 2: Simplify the following rational expressions.
Factor the numerator and the denominator, then cancel out common factors.
12 4 (3 ) 4
1) 9 x = 3 ( 3 x ) = 3 x
5 2 5−3 2
u v u u
2) u3 v 4 = v 4−2 = v 2 NOTE: Kung saan nakalagay ang term na may mas
malaking exponent, doon ilalagay ang sagot.

3) 20 n = 5 n ( 4 ) = 4
( m+ 4 )( 2−m ) m+4
4) ( 2−m )( m+1 ) = m+1

8 w ( 5+w ) ( 4 w ) ( 2 w ) ( 5+w ) 2w
5) 12 w ( w+5 )( w−1 ) = ( 4 w ) ( 3 ) ( w+5 )( w−1 ) = 3 ( w−1 )
EXERCISE 2:
