ACSR (Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced)
ACSR is a widely used overhead transmission line conductor made of aluminium strands wrapped
around a steel core. It combines the high conductivity of aluminium with the mechanical strength of
steel.
Construction:
• Outer layers: Aluminium (for conductivity)
• Inner core: Galvanized steel (for tensile strength)
Key Features:
• High tensile strength
• Lightweight
• Good electrical conductivity
• Suitable for long-span transmission
• Less sag compared to all-aluminium conductors
Applications:
• Overhead transmission lines (33 kV – 400 kV)
• Distribution networks
• Long river or valley crossings
Advantages:
• Strong mechanical support
• High current-carrying capacity
• Economical for long distances
• Corrosion-resistant steel core
Disadvantages:
• Skin effect increases resistance
• Requires careful jointing and tensioning
Common ACSR Sizes: Dog, Rabbit, Panther, Wolf, Moose, Zebra
