ESL Students
Welcome to Basic Writing!
•You will learn to:
•- Write sentences and paragraphs
•- Use proper punctuation
•- Avoid common mistakes
•Let’s begin!
What is Writing?
•Writing is using words to express
ideas.
•Why do we write?
•- To communicate
•- To explain
•- To tell stories
•Example:
•'Yesterday, I went to the park. I saw
ducks swimming in the pond.'
3Things Good Writing Needs:
1. Clear idea: Know what you want to say
•2. Correct grammar: Use correct word
order
•3. Simple words: Easy to understand
•Examples:
•Unclear: 'Many things happened I don’t
know.'
•Clear: 'I was tired because I studied all
night.'
Sentence Basics:
Every sentence needs:
•- Subject: who or what
•- Verb: action
•Examples:
•- The cat sleeps.
•- They play football.
•- My mom cooks dinner.
•Try: Write one sentence about yourself.
Capitalization and
Punctuation:
Use capital letters for:
•- Beginning of a sentence
•- Names (people, places)
•Use punctuation to end:
•- . Statement (I like school.)
•- ? Question (Do you like apples?)
•- ! Exclamation (That’s amazing!)
Writing a Paragraph
A good paragraph:
•- Starts with a topic sentence
•- Gives 2–4 details
•- Stays on one idea
•Example:
•'I like rainy days. I stay inside and
read books. I drink hot
chocolate. It feels cozy and
relaxing.'
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
❌ No subject: 'Go to school' → ✅ 'I go
to school.'
•❌ No punctuation: 'He likes ice cream' →
✅ 'He likes ice cream.'
•❌ Capital letter missing: 'she is kind.' →
✅ 'She is kind.'
Practice Time!
Write 3–5 sentences about your favorite hobby.
•Remember:
✔
• Capital letter at the beginning
✔
• Subject + verb in each sentence
✔
• Punctuation at the end
•Example:
•'I like drawing. I draw cartoons and animals. It makes me happy.'
