GRADE 8 MATHS: GRAPH PRACTICE TEST

Includes Data Graphs and Cartesian Graphs

PART 1: DATA GRAPHS (Bar, Line, Pie)

Question 1: Bar Graph

The table below shows the number of hours five students studied for exams:
Student Hours Studied
Anna 4
Ben 6
Cara 2
David 5
Ella 3

1. Draw a bar graph to represent the data.

2. Which student studied the most?
3. What is the difference between the most and least hours?
4. Find the average hours studied.

Question 2: Line Graph

Temperature in °C for one city over five days:
Day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri
Temperature (°C) 18 20 22 19 17

1. Plot a line graph showing temperature changes.

2. Which day was the highest?
3. Between which days did the largest drop occur?
4. What is the range of temperatures?

Question 3: Pie Chart

A class survey shows how students travel to school:
Mode of Transport Number of Students
Walking 10
Bus 15
Car 5
Bicycle 10
1. Calculate the total number of students.
2. Find the percentage for each category.
3. Draw a pie chart (use percentage × 360°).
4. Which transport is most common?
PART 2: CARTESIAN & LINEAR GRAPHS

Question 4: Plotting Points

Plot points A(1,2), B(2,4), C(3,6), D(4,8).
1. What type of graph do these points form?
2. Find the gradient of the line through A and C.

Question 5: Linear Equation Table

Complete the table for y = 2x + 1.
x -1 0 1 2 3
y ? ? ? ? ?

1. Find y-values and draw the graph.

2. State the gradient and y-intercept.

Question 6: Real-Life Linear Graph

A taxi charges R20 plus R5 per kilometre.
1. Write an equation to represent total cost (y) for x kilometres.
x (km) 0 1 2 3 4
y (R) ? ? ? ? ?

2. Draw the graph.

3. Find the cost of 5 km.
4. What does '20' represent in your equation?
GRADE 8 MATH GRAPH TEST - ANSWER SHEET

Answer 1: Ben studied the most. Difference = 4 hrs. Average = 4 hrs.

Answer 2: Highest temp on Wed (22°C). Largest drop: Wed–Fri. Range = 5°C.
Answer 3: Total = 40 students. Bus = 37.5%, most common.
Answer 4: Gradient = 2 (straight line).
Answer 5: y-values: -1, 1, 3, 5, 7. Gradient = 2, y-intercept = 1.
Answer 6: Equation y = 5x + 20. Cost(5 km) = R45. “20” = starting cost.
