Vector Physics - JEE Mains | Short Notes & Formula Sheet

1. Scalar vs Vector Quantities

Scalars: Only magnitude (e.g., mass, speed, energy)

Vectors: Magnitude + Direction (e.g., velocity, force)

2. Properties of Vectors

Follow parallelogram law of addition

Vector addition is commutative and associative

Definite direction

3. Types of Vectors

Polar, Axial, Unit, Null, Equal, Negative, Collinear, Coplanar

4. Vector Addition

Triangle Law: Tip-to-tail method

Polygon Law: For 3+ vectors

Resultant: R = sqrt(A^2 + B^2 + 2ABcostheta)

5. Vector Subtraction & Scalar Multiplication

Subtraction: A - B = A + (-B)

Scalar multiplication: Magnitude scaled, direction same

6. Resolution of Vectors

In 2D: A = A_x i + A_y j

In 3D: A = A_x i + A_y j + A_z k

7. Dot Product (Scalar Product)

A . B = ABcostheta -> Scalar

Vector Physics - JEE Mains | Short Notes & Formula Sheet

Applications: Work = F.d, Power = F.v

8. Cross Product (Vector Product)

A x B = ABsintheta n -> Vector

Direction: Right-hand rule

9. Formula Sheet

|A| = sqrt(Ax^2 + Ay^2 + Az^2)

Unit vector  = A / |A|

A . B = AxBx + AyBy + AzBz

costheta = (A . B) / (|A||B|)

A x B = |A||B|sintheta n

R = sqrt(A^2 + B^2 + 2ABcostheta)

tau = r x F, L = r x p
