CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rise of social media has transformed how information is produced, shared, and consumed across
the world. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (X), WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok have become
major sources of news, especially among young people. In Nigeria, social media plays a significant role
in shaping public opinion, political participation, and citizens’ engagement during elections. The 2023
presidential election was one of the most widely discussed and digitally influenced elections in Nigeria’s
history. Millions of Nigerians used social media to follow campaign activities, share political opinions,
and mobilize support for their preferred candidates.
However, while social media provides opportunities for fast and easy access to information, it also
creates a fertile ground for the spread of fake news. Due to the speed at which messages travel online,
political misinformation and false narratives can quickly go viral, influencing emotions, beliefs, and
electoral decisions. During the 2023 presidential election, Nigeria witnessed a significant increase in
manipulated videos, misleading statistics, false claims about candidates, and edited images meant to
create confusion or promote certain political agendas.
Fake news during elections is not a new problem, but its scale and impact have grown due to
technology and the widespread use of mobile phones. Many Nigerians rely on online platforms as their
primary source of political information, making them more vulnerable to misinformation. As a result,
fake news has the potential to affect voter behavior, reduce trust in democratic institutions, create
tension among supporters, and even contribute to electoral violence. Understanding how social media
contributed to the spread of fake news during the 2023 election is therefore important for strengthening
Nigeria’s democracy and improving future electoral processes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Elections require accurate information for citizens to make informed choices, but the presence of fake
news makes this difficult. In the 2023 presidential election, social media became a major platform for
political communication, but it also became a breeding ground for misleading content. Many false
claims were spread intentionally or unintentionally, making it challenging for voters to distinguish truth
from propaganda.
The problem is that while social media helps people stay connected, it also spreads misinformation
faster than traditional media. Fake news can shape public opinion, damage political reputations, cause
fear, and increase tension among supporters. Despite the growing threat of misinformation, many
Nigerians still lack adequate media literacy skills to verify information before sharing it.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
