Electrical Protection Basics – Complete Interview
Guide
1) Current Transformers (CTs)
CTs reduce high current to measurable values for relays.
- CT Ratio: Primary/Secondary (e.g., 1000/1A)
- Classes: Protection (5P, 10P, PX), Metering
- Important: Knee Point Voltage, Accuracy, Saturation
2) Voltage Transformers (VTs / PTs)
Used to step down voltage for relays and meters.
- Ratio example: 11kV / 110V
- Types: Inductive VT, Capacitive VT (CVT)
3) Protection Relays
Modern relays are numerical (IEDs). Functions include:
- Overcurrent (50/51)
- Earth Fault (50N/51N)
- Differential Protection (87)
- Distance Protection (21)
- Under/Over-voltage (27/59)
- Frequency Protection (81)
4) Protection Zones
System divided into zones for selective tripping:
- Generator zone
- Transformer zone
- Busbar zone
- Feeder zone
- Transmission line zone
5) Protection Coordination
Ensures the nearest device trips first.
- Uses curves (IEC, IEEE)
- Time grading
- Current grading
6) IEC 61850 Basics
Communication standard in substations.
- GOOSE Messaging
- MMS Protocol
- Logical Nodes
- IED-to-IED communication
7) SCADA Basics
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition:
- Monitoring (status, alarms)
- Control (open/close CB)
- Logging & Trending
8) Breaker Failure Protection (50BF)
If breaker fails to open → backup trip other breakers.
9) Differential Protection (87)
Compares current entering vs leaving equipment.
If difference > threshold → faults inside zone.
10) Distance Protection (21)
Used in transmission lines.
Trip based on voltage-current ratio (impedance).
Has Zones 1, 2, 3 with increasing time delays.
11) Interview Key Questions
- Explain CT saturation
- Why differential protection doesn’t need time delay?
- What is CT knee point?
- Difference between Overcurrent & Differential?
- What is GOOSE?
- How SCADA communicates with IEDs?
