DELTA Module One – Paper 2 Task 3 Guide

1. Overview

Paper 2 Task 3 assesses your ability to identify language features in a short text and explain how they
help the text achieve its communicative purpose.

2. Structure of the Task

You are given a text and two questions:

1) Identify features of the text (lexis, grammar, discourse, function).

2) Explain how these features achieve the text’s purpose.

3. Features You May Identify

- Lexical choice (formal/informal, collocation, connotation)

- Grammatical forms (tense, aspect, modality, voice)

- Discourse features (cohesion, reference, sequencing)

- Genre features (persuasion, instruction, narration)

4. How to Explain Their Contribution

You must link each feature to the overall purpose:

- Imperatives → give direct instructions

- Passives → create objectivity

- Sequencers → improve clarity and structure

- Technical lexis → increase precision

- Hedging → reduce force and increase politeness

5. High-Scoring Strategy

- Use DELTA-level terminology

- Provide 6–10 features in Q1

- Provide clear, concise explanations in Q2


- Always connect features to purpose (e.g., persuade, instruct, inform)

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

- Listing without explanation

- Giving irrelevant features
