Illustrations Based on Optical Instruments
1) A compound microscope uses an objective lens of focal length 4 cm and eye lens of
focal length 10 cm. An object is placed 6 cm from the objective lens.
(a) Calculate the magnifying power of the compound microscope if the final image
is formed at the near point.
(b) Calculate the length of the compound microscope.
2) A compound microscope with an objective of 1.0 cm focal length and an eyepiece of
2.0 cm focal length has a tube length of 20 cm. Calculate the magnifying power of the
MICROSCOPE if the final image is formed at the near point of the eye.
3) A compound microscope has a magnification of 30. The focal length of the eyepiece
is 5 cm. Assuming the final image to be formed at the least distance of distinct vision
(25 cm), calculate the magnification produced by the objective.
4) A compound microscope consists of an objective lens of focal length 2.0 cm and an
eyepiece of focal length 6.25 cm separated by a distance of 15 cm. How far from the
objective should an object be placed in order to obtain the final image at :
(a) the least distance of distinct vision (25 cm)
(b) infinity?
What is the magnifying power of the microscope in each case?
5) The focal lengths of the eyepiece and the objective of a compound microscope are 5
cm and 1 cm respectively and the length of the tube is 20 cm. Calculate the
magnifying power of the microscope when the final image is formed at infinity. The
value of least distance of distinct vision is 25 cm.
6) In an astronomical telescope, the power of the objective lens is +1.2 D, while that of
the eyepiece is +50 D. Calculate :
(a) the length of the tube of the telescope; and
(b) its angular magnification.
7) An astronomical telescope having magnifying power of 5 consists of two thin lenses
24 cm apart. Find the focal length of the lenses.
8) A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 140 cm and an eyepiece of
focal length 5 cm. What is the magnifying power of the telescope for viewing distant
objects when :
(a) the telescope is in normal adjustment (i.e. when the final image is at infinity),
(b) the final image is formed at the least distance of distinct vision (25 cm)?
9) (a) For the telescope described in illustration 3 (a), what is the separation between
the objective lens and the eyepiece?
(b) If the telescope is used in view a 100 m tall tower 3 km away, what is the height of
the image of the tower formed by the objective lens?
(c) What is the height of the final image of the tower if it is formed at 25 cm?
