If-Clause Main-Clause
For : If +Present Simple , Present Simple
( S + V1 ) ( S + V1 )
Note
ȲIf the Main-Clause comes first , don't use comma between
the Main-Clause & If clause.
If i get sick , I go to the doctor.
I go to the doctor if I get sick.
Ȳ We can replace '' If '' with '' When '' without changing the
meaning as both express general truths or facts.
If you mix red and blue, you get purple.

Ē First Conditionals
Ȳ Also known as Conditional type 1 , Probable (Possible) condition.
Ȳ It talks about possible future condition & its possible
future result or Predicting a likely result in the future if the
condition happens.
Examples :
1. If you Study hard , you will pass the exam.
2. If we don't leave soon, we will miss our bus.
3. If it rains, we will cancel the trip.
For : If + Present Simple , will + V1 will Can, Could, may ,
( S + V1 ) might,going to
1. If I'm late for work again, I might lose my job.
2. When you tell john the news,he's going to faint.

- If : Used for possible situations

Ē Second Conditionals
Ȳ Also known as Conditional type 2 , Improbable condition.
Ȳ It talks about an imaginary /unreal / hypothetical
condition plus an imaginary / unreal / hypothetical result.
Ȳ It expresses Present unreal situation.
Examples :
1. If I Studied hard, I would pass the exam.
2. If I won the lottery, I would buy a car.
3. If she stopped smoking cigarettes, she would be healthy.

1. If I were you, I might take the job.
2. If you were here, you could join us.

Ȳ Also known as Conditional type 3 , Impossible condition.
Ȳ The third conditional is used to talk about hypothetical situations in
the past—events that did not happen. It often expresses regret, missed
opportunities, or speculation about how things could have been di erent.
Examples :
1. If I had Studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
2. If I had taken the bus, I wouldn't have been late.
3. If I hadn't been sick, I would have gone to your party.
4. If I had gone to the party, I would have seen her.
