DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS
By gender the majority 55.9%(38) of the participants were females while 44.1%(30) were males
the targeted participants were aged between [Link] of the participants who took part in this
research study were aged between 21-24, 58.8%(40).and the lowest group were aged between
31-35,1.5%(1).on gender most of single participants took part in this research
study77.9%(53)and the lowest is divorced only 2.9%(2).on tribe a lot of Lhomwe took
part36.8%(25)more than 39.7%(27) had attained secondary education.

The results shows that,88.2% of the youths has knowledge on hypertension and only 11.8 of the
youths has no knowledge on hypertension.88.2%of the youths understood the information after
the interview.

Based on the table provided, the risk factors for hypertension known by the clients. Stress
(80.9%) the majority of the participants recognize stress as a major risk factor for hypertension.
Obesity (76.6%) a significant proportion of the youth are aware of the link between obesity and
hypertension. (77.9%) of the youth understands the role of the physical inactivity in hypertension
(80.9) awareness of the impact of high sodium intake is relatively high.(83.8%)this is the most
recognized risk factor suggesting wide spread awareness about unhealthy eating habits (69.1)
moderate participants are aware that alcohol consumption contribute to hypertension.

From the table above about 54 {79.4%) of the participants are aware that losing weight is one of the
way of preventing the risk of hypertension. Whilst (82.4%) of the participants also know that doing
exercise regularly help in prevention of hypertension. (79.4%) of the participants knows that eating
healthy diet help in prevention of hypertension. (83.8%) of the participants highly knows that, reducing
sodium intake and reducing stress also help in prevention of hypertension. (63.2%) participants were
aware that reducing caffeine help in prevention of hypertension.(75.0%) of the participants were aware
that limiting alcohol intake helps in prevention of hypertension and (76.5%) of the participants were
aware that quitting smoking also help in prevention of hypertension and those who do blood pressure
monitoring were 77.9%.85.5 % of the participants knows that reducing stress helps in prevention of
hypertension.

According to the table above, it shows that, a lot of participants (people) got the information
from the hospital which is (88.2%) and the lowest got information from the church which is
(33.8%)

The table above shows the frequency and kinds of exercises done by the participants in
prevention of hypertension. Most of the participants do walking which is20.6%others do
jogging10.3%, dancing 5.9%, most of the people do it twice a week which is 30.9% and others
do it 3 times in a week which is 16.2%

According to the results above it shows that a lot of people add fruits and vegetables in their
meals.89.7 add fruits and vegetables while10.3 % not add the fruits and vegetables during their
meals.79.4%limits salt intake while 20.6 do not limits salt intake and the clients who add raw salt
to their meals were 83.8%.

According to the data collected it shows that, the life style of the participants a lot of participants
do not smoke and drink but some do.89.7%0f the participants do not smoke but10.3%of the
participants do smoke.83.8% of the participants do not take alcohol but 16.2% take alcohol.

According to the data collected a lot of the participants wanted to control hypertension but within
the way they meet some of the obstacles e.g. 57.4%have limited food, 39.7% lack knowledge on
information regarding hypertension, 45.6% because of expensiveness of food, 39.7 lack time to
follow the prevention measures in controlling hypertension and finally 51.5 lacks motivation in
controlling hypertension.
