• Evaluate 1 − − 𝑑𝐴 where region R is a rectangular region
2 2
given by 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.
Solution:
Because the region R is a square, it is both vertically
and horizontally simple, and you can use either order
of integration
Choose dy, dx by placing a vertical representative
rectangle in the region, as shown in the figure.
Double integral in polar coordinates
• Suppose that 𝑓(𝑟, 𝜃) is defined over a region R bounded by
by radii vectors with 𝑅 = 𝑟, 𝜃 : 𝑎 ≤ 𝑟 ≤ 𝑏, 𝛼 ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 𝛽
represented in the figure as:

• To compute the double integral 𝑥 𝑓 , 𝑦 𝑑𝐴, where R is a polar
rectangle, we divide:
a. The interval [𝑎, 𝑏] into 𝑚 subinterval [𝑟𝑖−1, 𝑟𝑖 ] of equal width
∆𝑟 = 𝑟𝑖 − 𝑟𝑖−1
b. The interval [𝑎, 𝑏] into 𝑚 subinterval [𝜃𝑗−1, 𝜃𝑗 ] of equal width
∆𝜃 = 𝜃𝑗 − 𝜃𝑗−1

• The polar rectangles are then shown as:

• We compute the area of 𝑅𝑖𝑗 using the fact that the area
of a sector of a circle with radius 𝑟 and central

• Subtracting the areas of two such sectors, each of which
has central angle ∆𝜃𝑗 = 𝜃𝑗 − 𝜃𝑗−1 , we find that the area of
𝑅𝑖𝑗 is:
• So, a typical Riemann Sum for polar coordinates is given as:
𝑟 𝑓 , 𝜃 𝑑𝐴 =
