Human Centered Design Thinking

During the human-centered design process you will understand the problems,
needs, and opportunities in your community and develop innovative solutions.
Human Centered Design Thinking

 Empathize (Step 1). - understand your potential audience

 Define (Step 2). - make sense of the information you have gathered about your
audience and their needs. Based on this understanding, you will define the
challenge your team will take on and craft a meaningful and actionable problem
statement.
 Ideate (Step 3). - focus on coming up with ideas and seek many possible approaches
to solve a problem.
 Prototype (Step 4). – reflect on what has been learned and how your idea fits. Design
a product or concept that addresses
 Test (Step 5). - gather feedback on the prototype from potential audience
HOW TO APPLY EMPATHY

» Observe. Learn about the behavior of your potential

audience; to the greatest extent, observe their behavior in
addition to conducting interviews. Pay attention to
differences between what people say and what they do.

» Engage. Prepare questions you would like to ask, but let the
conversation deviate from them. Try to get stories from the
people you talk to and always ask “Why?” to uncover deeper
meanings and motivations.
What are three words that describe your community?
Design Thinking – Defining the Problem

Writing a Problem Statement

[Who] … needs a way to … [what] … because … [why].

For example: Local farmers in Iraq need a way to conserve and

reuse water because they do not have access to water year-
round and there is a lack of water access for their crops.
