COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

Introduction to Control System Course Code: EEng4161

Assignment [15%]
Year/Semester: IV/II
Submission Date: July 20, 2016E.C [Morning]

Instruction:
✓ Do the assignment in group of seven.
✓ The maximum number of students in a group should be seven.
✓ Show all the necessary steps.
✓ Unreadable answer will not have credit.
1. Discuss in detail about open loop and closed loop control system with block diagram. Write at least
four applications of control systems.

2. Explain the positive and negative feedback in a closed loop control system. What are the
differences between them and how they affect the control system?

3. Draw the control block diagram for a household constant-temperature type (with double metallic
sheets) electric iron.

4. The role of air traffic control system is increasing as air-plane traffic increases at busy airports.
Engineers are developing air traffic control systems and collision avoidance system using the
Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation satellite. GPS allows each air craft to know its
position in the air-space landing corridor very precisely. Sketch a block diagram depicting how an
air traffic controller might utilize GPS for air craft collision avoidance.
5. Consider the following control system to fill a container with water after it is emptied through a
stopcock at the bottom. The system must automatically shut off the water when the container is
filled. Then, draw the block diagram and signal flow graph. Identify the basic control elements?

6. The following diagram shows the structure of a refrigerator.

(a) Draw the block diagram of the cooling system of the refrigerator, and clearly mark the flow
of the refrigerant.
(b) There is a temperature controller for the adjustment of the inner temperature of the
refrigerator.
(i) Draw the block diagram of the control system of the refrigerator.
(ii) Is the control system of the refrigerator classified as open loop or close loop control
system?
7. Find the Laplace transform of 𝒕𝟔 𝒆−𝟕𝒕 .
8. A field-controlled dc motor is shown below.
The following components are used in this system.
Rf=Field winding resistance
Lf=inductance of field winding
If=field current
ef=field control voltage
Tm=torque developed by motor
Ө=angular displacement of motor shaft
J=equivalent moment of inertia and load referred to motor shaft
f=equivalent viscous friction coefficient of motor and load referred to motor
shaft
a. Drive the mathematical model of the field-controlled DC motor.
b. Find the transfer function of the motor taking the field voltage as input and the
E(S)
position of the rotor shaft as output, .
θ(S)
9. For the following block diagram of the system. Determine the transfer function
C(s)/R(s), using: a. Block diagram reduction technique
b. Manson’s gain formula

10. Find the transfer function, C(s)/R(s) for the signal flow graph shown below.
Hint: Use Manson’s Gain formula
