REFLECTION
Which philosophy resonates most with your idea of education?
The philosophy that resonates most to me as an educator is the philosophy of John Dewey
about progressivism, “Learning by doing”. This philosophy is a learner centered philosophy
where they believe that everything that a learner should learn is through his/her active
participation and actual experiences rather than passive and rote. This philosophy shows the
importance of active engagement of the world rather than absorbing facts from what they hear
and read. This philosophy emphasizes that learner should learn problem solving skill by
practicing real world problems in the learning process. This enables the learners to create bridge
between the school and real world. This enables students to have a deeper understanding about
the complexity of life, it is more than memorization and facts given by the educators. Indeed
“Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself. Learning should not only prepare
us to what future holds but rather learning happens in the present. Education should not limit us
to using this knowledge and skills in the future but we apply and learn through what we do, what
we feel and what we experience. It should not only be useful later but learning should be applied
today. Learners are already living that’s why education should be an active, living experience
and not just for preparation for adulthood. Education should not enclosed and be limited to
passing the exam, getting high grades, memorization of facts and only prepares them towards
college, rather education should focus on living well now and personal growth. Experience,
personal growth and interaction are puzzle pieces of a persons development so it should also be a
part of learners [Link] an educator we should act as a facilitator towards our learners in
unlocking their potential and possibilities. Let them experience and actively engage towards the
learning process enable for them to acquire critical thinking and problem solving skills.
How can different philosophies be integrated in the classroom?
Progressivism – instead of discussing what is pollution, allow students to create a recycling plan
for school in combating the problem in segregation, Let them engage in tree planting activities
enable for them to learn the importance of trees in the environment.
What tensions exist between traditional and progressive philosophies?
