Riemann Sums and Area Calculations

Homework 9 for the course 10.013 Modelling and Analysis is due on November 17, 2025, and requires students to practice problem set 9 beforehand. The homework consists of two main problems involving the calculation of areas under curves using Riemann sums and definite integrals for the functions f(x) = 12x² + 1 and g(x) = x. Students are instructed to document any AI assistance they seek, including prompts and critiques of AI responses.

013 Modelling and Analysis

Homework 9
Due Date: 8pm, 17 November 2025

Before attempting this homework, you should first practice on problem set 9 to strengthen your
understanding of the relevant concepts, as the problem set contains basic and routine problems.
Otherwise, you might find this homework too difficult and it’s counterproductive.

1. Given the graph of a function f (x) = 12 x2 + 1 as shown in the figure below, we would like to
find the shaded area formed by the graph and the x-axis between x = 0 and x = 3.

𝑦𝑦
1
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 1
2

Δ𝐴𝐴𝑘𝑘

𝑥𝑥
𝑐𝑐𝑘𝑘

*This figure is created using the graph obtained from [Link]

(a) Subdivide [0,3] into n equal subintervals of length ∆x and let ck be a point in the k-th
subinterval. What is the area ∆Ak of the k-th subinterval if approximating the area by
a rectangle whose height is f (ck )?
(b) Estimate the total area using RIGHT endpoint Riemann sum with four subintervals.
Give your answer to two decimal places.
(c) Estimate the total area using LEFT endpoint Riemann sum with four subintervals. Give
your answer to two decimal places.
(d) Express the total area as a limit of a Riemann sum and hence a definite integral.

If you consult AI for this problem, you must include the prompts used, your critiques on AI
answers and the corrections that you make.

(a) Subdivide [0,3] into n equal subintervals of length ∆x and let ck be a point in the k-th
subinterval. What is the area ∆Ak of the k-th subinterval if approximating the area by
a rectangle whose height is determined by f (ck ) and g(ck )?
(b) Estimate the total area using RIGHT endpoint Riemann sum with four subintervals.
Give your answer to two decimal places.
(c) Estimate the total area using LEFT endpoint Riemann sum with four subintervals. Give
your answer to two decimal places.
