1. The radius of a right circular cone is increasing at the rate of (6+A) cm/sec while its altitude is decreasing at (3+B)
cm/sec. Find the rate of change of its volume when its radius is (8+C) cm and its altitude is (A+B+20) cm.
2. A ladder (6+A) m long leans against a vertical wall. The lower end of the ladder is moved away from the wall at the rate
of (2+B) m/min. Find the rate of change of the area formed by the wall, the floor and the ladder when the lower end is
(4+C) m from the wall.
3. A boy (5+A) ft tall is walking away from a street light at the rate of (3+B) ft/sec. If the light is (12+C) ft above the level
ground, determine (a) the rate at which his shadow is lengthening, (b) the rate at which the tip of his shadow is moving and
(c) the rate at which his head is receding from the light when he is (24+D) ft from the point directly below the light.
4. Water is running out of a conical tank (3+A) m across the top and (4+B) m deep at the rate of (2+C) m³/min. Find the rate
at which the level of water drops when it is (1+D) m from the top.
5. A reservoir is in the form of a frustum of a cone with upper base of radius (9+A) ft and lower base of radius (4+B) ft and
altitude of (10+C) ft. The water in the reservoir is x ft deep. If the level of the water is increasing at (4+A) ft/min, how fast
is the volume of the water in the reservoir increasing when its depth is (2+D) ft?
NOTE: The volume of a frustum of a cone of upper base radius R and lower base radius r and height h is
V = (1/3) π h (R² + r² + Rr).
6. At noon, ship A is sailing due east at the rate of (20+A) km/hr. At the same time, another ship B, (100+B) km east of ship
A, is sailing on a course 60° north of west at the rate of (10+C) km/hr. How fast is the distance between them changing at
the end of one hr? When will the distance between them be least?
7. A ship is sailing north at (22+A) km/hr. A second ship sailing east at (16+B) km/hr crosses the path of the first ship
(85+C) km ahead of it. How fast is the distance between them changing one hour later? When are they closest together?
8. Two roads intersect at 60°. A car (10+A) miles from the junction moves towards it at (30+B) mi/hr while a bus (10+C)
miles from the junction moves away from it at (60+D) mi/hr. Calculate the rate at which the distance between the vehicles is
changing at the end of (20+A+B) min.
9. A bridge is (10+A) m above a railroad track and at right angles to it. A train running at the rate of (20+B) m/s passes
under the center of the bridge at the same instant that a car running (15+C) m/s reaches that point. How rapidly are they
separating (3+D) seconds later?
10. A light at eye level stands (7+A) meters from a house and (5+B) meters from a path leading from the house to the street.
A man walks along the path at (2+C) meters per second. Find the rate at which his shadow moves along the wall of the
house when he is (3+D) meters from the house.
11. A lamp post (3+A) m high is (6+B) m from a wall. A man (2+C) m tall is walking directly from the post toward the wall
at (2.5+D) m/s. How fast is his shadow moving up the wall when he is (1.5+A+C) m from the wall?
12. The volume of a cube is increasing at the rate of (6+A) cm³/min. How fast is the surface area increasing when the length
of an edge is (12+B) cm?
13. Sand is poured at the rate of (10+A) m³/min so as to form a conical pile whose altitude is always equal to the radius of
its base. Find the rate at which the area of its base is increasing when the radius is (5+B) m.
14. A trough whose cross section is an equilateral triangle is (6+A) m long and (2+B) m wide across the top. If water is
entering the trough at (15+C) m³/min, at what rate is the water level rising in the trough when it is three-fourths full?
15. Water is poured into an inverted conical cistern of altitude (12+A) ft and radius of base (5+B) ft. If the water level rises
at (36+C) ft/min, find the rate at which the dry surface of the inside of the cone is decreasing when the water is (4+D) ft
deep.
16. A spherical iron ball (8+A) cm in diameter is coated with a layer of ice of uniform thickness. If the ice melts at the
uniform rate of (10+B) cm³/min, how fast is the thickness decreasing at the instant when it is (2+C) cm thick?
17. Water flows out of a hemispherical tank at a rate which is (4+A-D) times the square root of its depth. If the radius of the
tank is (8+B-C) ft, how fast is the water level falling when the water is (4+C-A) ft deep?
Hint: Use the formula for the volume of a spherical segment, i.e. V = (1/3) π h² (3r - h).
Note: The values of Constants A, B, C, D can be determined using the following:

B = First Letter of your Middle Name
C = First Letter of your Family Name
D = First Letter Current Location (Municipality/City)
Constants A-E F-J K-O P-T U-Z
