SS1 Further Mathematics – Full Notes With Diagrams

& Exam Questions

1. Set Theory

A set is a collection of distinct objects. Common operations include Union (A ∪ B), Intersection (A ∩ B),
Complement (A').

A B

Exam Questions – Set Theory

1. Given U={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8}, A={1,2,3,4}, B={3,4,5,6}. Find: (a) A ∪ B (b) A ∩ B (c) A'.

2. If 50 students offer Maths, 30 offer Physics, and 12 offer both, how many offer at least one of the
two?

3. Draw a Venn diagram to show three sets A, B, and C where A and B overlap but C is disjoint.
2. Indices

Laws: a^m × a^n = a^(m+n), a^m / a^n = a^(m−n), (a^m)^n = a^(mn), a^0 = 1, a^(-n)=1/a^n.

Exam Questions – Indices

1. Simplify: 3^4 × 3^2.

2. Simplify: (5^3 × 5^-1)/5^2.

3. Solve for x: 2^(x+1) = 32.

3. Logarithms

Definition: log_b(a) = x means b^x = a. Laws: log(ab)=loga+logb, log(a/b)=loga−logb, log(a^k)=k loga.

Exam Questions – Logarithms

1. Evaluate: log■■(1000).

2. Express log(25) in terms of log5.

3. Solve for x: log x = 2.

4. Coordinate Geometry 1 (Distance, Midpoint, Slope)

Distance formula: √[(x2−x1)² + (y2−y1)²]. Midpoint formula: ((x1+x2)/2 , (y1+y2)/2). Slope:

(y2−y1)/(x2−x1).

(7,8)

(2,3)

Exam Questions – Coordinate Geometry 1

1. Find the distance between (2,3) and (7,8).

2. Find the midpoint of (−2,5) and (4,9).

3. Determine the slope of the line joining (1,2) and (4,11).

5. Coordinate Geometry 2 (Parallel & Perpendicular Lines)

Parallel lines have equal slopes. Perpendicular lines satisfy m1 × m2 = −1.

Exam Questions – Coordinate Geometry 2

1. A line L1 has slope 3. Find the slope of a line perpendicular to it.

2. Find the equation of the line through (1,2) with slope 4.

3. Determine whether lines y=2x+1 and y=2x−5 are parallel.

6. Surds

Surds are irrational roots. Examples: √2, √3, √5. Simplify using √(ab)=√a√b and rationalise
denominators.

Exam Questions – Surds

1. Simplify √75.

2. Rationalise: 7/√5.

3. Simplify: 3√2 + 5√2 − √2.
