What does comparing mean in writing?

In general use, such as in writing a “compare/contrast” essay, compare


means “find the similarities” and contrast means “find the differences.”
Compare discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses
elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then, analyses two
subjects by comparing them, contrasting them, or both…

Definition of compare: It is to say that something is similar to something


else.

 The poet compared his sweetheart to a beautiful rose.


 The singer's voice has been compared to that of Elvis.

Compare here refers to identifying the similarities that exist in the 2 unique
subjects you have chosen. The similarities, thus, become the basis of
comparison. The objective is to explore and produce similarities about the
subjects in hand.

To compare is to bring two or more things together (physically or in


contemplation) and to examine them systematically, identifying similarities
among them. Any exploration of the similarities or differences of two or more
units is a comparison. To compare things, they must have characteristics that are
similar enough in relevant ways to merit comparison.

Comparison or comparing is the act of evaluating two or more things by


determining the relevant, comparable characteristics of each thing, and then
determining which characteristics of each are similar to the other. The
description of similarities found between the two things is also called a
comparison.
