Introduction to a Health Science Topic
The health science topic I would like to research on is ‘The Relationship between Belly Fat
and Menopause in Women’.
As defined by Mayo Clinic Staff, “menopause is the time that marks the end of your
menstrual cycles. It’s diagnosed after you’ve gone 12 months without a menstrual period”
(para. 1, 2023). It has been observed that a larger percentage of women develop belly fat in
the years leading up to or following menopause. Research has it that this changes in women
is related to reduce oestrogen level which causes the accumulation of fat around the waist
instead of the hips and thighs. This results in several health complications in the later years of
the women lives (Better Health Channel., 2022).
Quantitative Research Question
Question 1: Is menopause the only cause of belly fat accumulation in women?
Question 2: Apart from pre and post-menopausal symptoms, is sedentary lifestyles in anyway
associated with increased belly fat in older women?
Question 3: Can the use of drugs to increase the oestrogen levels help prevent or reduce the
accumulation of belly fat?
Data Collection Techniques
Surveys: I would collect data by designing a questionnaire containing questions related to
women, menopausal symptoms, and increase in belly fat (Chipeta, 2020).
Secondary Data Collection: I would collect data for my research by exploring previously
conducted research and peer-reviewed articles on related topics.
Interviews: I could also collect data by conducting a one-on-one interview with some
individuals so as to gather data regarding their belly fat before and after menopause.
