As explained by Enago Academy (2024), pilot study is “a preliminary, small-scale

“rehearsal” in which you test the methods you plan to use for your research project”. It is a

feasibility study conducted to evaluate certain factors such as data analysis and sample size

involved in the research. A pilot study should be performed both qualitatively and

quantitatively (Enago Academy, 2024).

The purpose of pilot study in a research plan include:

Determining the sample size: Pilot study provides valuable information that would enhance

estimation of the sample size required for the main research study (In, 2017).

Feasibility assessment: Pilot study is conducted for the purpose of pre-studying and

understanding all the procedures that would be used for the main study as well as to decide

on the method of data collection (In, 2017).

Recruitment and consent of the participants: Another purpose of pilot study is to seek for

the full consent of the participants by providing them with enough information about the

main study and giving them time to make their decision (In, 2017).

Resources: Pilot study also help gather enough information on whether the main study will

be cost effective or not, time consuming or not, energy consuming or not.

It is necessary to conduct a pilot study because it helps to avoid potential pitfalls and

challenges that could compromise the validity of the results; thus increasing the likelihood of

producing reliable and valid results in the main study.
