Algebra Module
Introduction to Algebra
Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses symbols, letters, and numbers to represent
relationships and solve problems.
Module Objectives
- Understand algebraic expressions and their components.
- Perform operations on algebraic expressions.
- Solve linear equations and inequalities.
- Translate verbal statements into algebraic expressions.
- Apply algebra in real-life problem solving.
Lesson 1: Algebraic Expressions
1.1 What is an Algebraic Expression?
An algebraic expression is a combination of numbers, variables, and operations.
1.2 Parts of an Expression
- Variable – a letter that represents an unknown value.
- Constant – a fixed number.
- Coefficient – the number multiplied by a variable.
- Term – parts of an expression separated by + or −.
1.3 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Examples:
4x + 3x = 7x
2a - 5a = -3a
Lesson 2: Operations on Algebraic Expressions
Addition and Subtraction: add or subtract like terms.
Multiplication: use the distributive property.
Division: divide coefficients and variables when possible.
Lesson 3: Linear Equations
A linear equation is an equation whose highest exponent of the variable is 1.
Example: 2x + 5 = 11
Lesson 4: Inequalities
Symbols: <, >, ≤, ≥
Solve similarly to equations but reverse the inequality when multiplying or dividing by a
negative number.
Lesson 5: Word Problems
Translating statements into algebraic expressions.
Practice Exercises and Answer Key included.
