Calculate Polar Distance Formula

The document provides a formula for calculating polar distance (D) between two points on Earth using their latitudes and longitudes. It defines the variables involved, including the Earth's mean radius (R) and the differences in latitude (Δφ) and longitude (Δλ). The formula utilizes the arcsine function to compute the distance in kilometers or nautical miles.

Polar Distance (D) = 2 * R * arcsin(√(sin²(Δφ/2) + cos(φ1) *

cos(φ2) * sin²(Δλ/2)))

Where:

 D represents the polar distance, typically measured in

kilometers (km) or nautical miles (nmi).

 R is the mean radius of the Earth, approximately 6,371

kilometers (for distances in kilometers) or 3,959 miles (for

distances in nautical miles).

 φ1 and φ2 are the latitudes of the two points in radians.

 Δφ is the difference in latitudes between the two points in

radians.

 Δλ is the difference in longitudes between the two points in

radians.
