INSTALLATION OF WALL TILING

THE HABITAT FIELD

Here are the different steps necessary for installing wall tiles.

1- CALCULATION OF NECESSARY QUANTITIES.

To know the quantities of tiles and tile adhesive required for the completion of a job, one needs to
calculate the total area to be tiled and add 10% for cuts, breakages... I therefore multiply the area by

TILING
Lesson 4
Laying tiles on the floor
Associated Knowledge S3.06 Tiling works (Interior floors, Wall tiles, Exterior floors, paving...)
THE HABITAT FIELD

Here are the different steps necessary for installing floor tiles.

1- THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSTALLATION.

A-SUR CONCRETE SHAPE

Clean the screed with a vacuum cleaner and wash with it.
an alkaline detergent (type St Marc). Apply a
primary if necessary. Perform a leveling in
cases of irregularities in the soil.

Use a tile adhesive and grout.

B- ON OLD TILING

Clean the tiles with a vacuum and mop.

with an alkaline detergent (type St Marc). Stab
the old tiling if it is very smooth. Apply a
primary if necessary. Carry out a leveling in
cases of irregularities in the soil.

Use a specific adhesive mortar and do not

align the joints of the new tiles and
those of the old one.

ON A PARTICLE BOARD FLOOR

Vacuum the floor and scrub with it

an alkaline detergent (St Marc type). Apply a
primary if necessary. Carry out a leveling in
cases of irregularities in the soil.

Use a specific adhesive mortar or a

glue with an additive and a special soft joint or a
joint with adjuvant.
2- INSTALLATION PRODUCTS.

Primary:Apply with a roller or a brush before leveling or bonding.

Is used on a porous substrate or on wood and creates a film between the substrate and the
Glue. Allows to improve the adhesion of tiles to the substrate.

Adjuvant:Mix with glue to enhance its adhesion and flexibility. Allows

to absorb the dimensional variations of the support.

Jointing product: Applied with a soft rubber squeegee for filling

the space between the tiles (joint).

Self-leveling screed: It is applied to the leveler to correct floor defects (maximum 5 mm) and
obtain a good flatness of the support.

Mortar adhesive: Powder adhesive that is mixed with water and applied with a spatula.

3- PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION.

Organize yourself to always finish with a row of whole tiles at the level of the entrance door of the room.
or the reference opening. The installation must always start according to two perfectly perpendicular axes.

Draw two perpendicular axes on the ground using the

cord, either in the middle of the room, or starting from the Fig. 1
main access center. (fig. 1)

Position the tiles without gluing them starting from Fig. 2

these axes up to the walls. Do not forget to hold
account for the thickness of the joints. (fig.2)

This glue-free installation, called 'dry fitting', is for you

allows you to choose the solution that will be the most
aesthetics, or that will optimize your cuts.
4- APPLICATION OF THE GLUE AND INSTALLATION OF THE TILING.

The installation begins with the gluing of the tiles from Fig. 1
on the wall opposite the entrance. (fig. 1)
Your first glued row will consist of
solid tiles, you will then lay the tiles
with cutting. You should not glue more than one
surface of 1m² (1m x 1m).

Fig. 2
Spread the glue on the floor with a trowel and the
comb with a notched spatula on small
surfaces 1m². Hold the spatula at about 60°.
for a good distribution. (fig. 2)

Lay the tile on the adhesive. For sizes 20 x

20 cm and more, plan for double bonding of the floor and
tile. (fig.3)
To glue the back of the tiles, just scrape.
Fig. 3
with a trowel apply a thin layer of glue.
The regular spacing between the tiles (the joint) is
made with the crossbars. (fig.4)
The width of the joint varies depending on the chosen tile.
and the desired aesthetics.

Fig. 4

Check the flatness of the tiled surface.

Gently tap with the rubber mallet or on
with the help of a wooden bat, the tiles that stick out.
The bat must rest on several tiles. (fig.5)
Don't forget to remove the crossbars before the
hardening of the glue.
Clean the excess glue.

Let dry for 24 hours before pouring the joints.

Make sure not to walk on the tiles Fig. 5
freshly laid.
5- THE CUTS.

Fig. 1

For straight cuts: use a

little square. (fig. 1)

For cutting the last tile along the wall:

superimpose a tile on the second to last one.
Place a tile above and slide it down until the Fig. 2

joint. Your tile is ready to be cut at the

of the rounding. (fig. 3)

ceramic, to gently notch.

For the finishing: file the irregular edges.

6- THE JOINTING.

At this stage, the spacers must have been removed.

Before applying the grouting product, wipe the surface with a mop to facilitate the adhesion of the grouting product.

24 hours after installation, on a surface of

tile of approximately 1 m2, spread the product on
oblique with a soft rubber squeegee
up to the deep filling of the joint.
After a few minutes, clean the tiled surface.

masked by the baseboard along the wall.

7- THE INSTALLATION OF PLINTHS.

Once the tiling is laid and grouted, cover the

peripheral joint (expansion joint) by gluing a
baseboard along the walls. (fig.1)
