Descripción del Curso:
Analyze what the Bible says about the theme of teamwork, because
when the goals that are shared in the church are not achieved, there arises the
dissatisfaction, complaints, murmurs, criticisms, etc. A large part of this problem
it's because they haven't learned to work in a team. Many members of the
different Ministries that work in the Churches see each other as rivals and
each one tries to be "The one with the best ideas", "The one who makes the best decisions"
"decisions", "The smartest one" or "The hardest worker"; forgetting the purposes
commonalities that have them working together.
Course Objectives:
1. Raise awareness within the church leadership about the need to work as a team
complementing each other with the different gifts and talents that God has
given to each one for the building of their church.
2. Know the biblical principles of what it means to work in a team and develop
attitudes that help us be agents of unity and harmony and not of division.
3. Analizar ejemplos bíblicos que nos ayuden a entender la importancia del trabajo
in Team and its positive results.
TEAMWORK
Bases Bíblicas: Génesis 11, Eclesiastés 4:9-12, 1 Crónicas 19: 26-30, Juan 17.
INTRODUCTION
In the history of the church, one of the most dramatic elements has been the
individualistic tendency of its leaders and members. That is to say, for some reason, in
In our ecclesiastical culture, teamwork seems to be something impossible.
Every pastor, every supervisor, every leader is always looking for and fulfilling their
own purposes and their own way of seeing the work of God.
Finally, all of this is reflected in the life of the local church where each leader
seeks to do their work to surpass others or to demonstrate that he or she is
better than the others. We could conclude that the lack of teamwork is
an endemic thing. The question arises immediately. Which biblical models can we
use to demonstrate that humanly speaking, very little can be achieved
when there is no teamwork.
Teamwork requires individuals to be willing to set aside their own ego.
their own agendas, their own goals, even their own visions, to achieve the
common good through a common vision. Ultimately achieving results
truly successful. Let's examine the key elements of what it means
and requires to work in a team.
I. WHAT IS A TEAM?
A group of people with complementary skills who are dedicated to a
common purpose, performance goals, and ways of proceeding, by which they
they make each other responsible. Let's analyze the elements that make up a
good team.
WE ARE A TEAM IF WE UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER CLEARLY (Genesis 11)
Working in a team requires proper and smooth communication.
Generally, when we examine the passage from Genesis 11, we see it from a
negative perspective since the story of the Tower of Babel is precisely something
negative. It is the story of human pretension to want to reach the glory of God
by their own means. It is the humanistic attitude that says "Let's build a tower
to reach heaven and make a name for ourselves.” However, viewed from another perspective,
we find in this passage human elements that God acknowledged as
indestructible and unstoppable.
We know this story well, the Bible says, 'That God saw that the work that
they could not be stopped because those who worked in it had the same language and
They spoke the same language. He said therefore, let us descend and confuse their languages.
Two things are remarkable about this. God recognizes that nothing could stop the work of the
Ninivitas because there was fluid communication between them. Their work was
clearly defined and understood each other. We cannot undermine the
importance of communication in teamwork. Many of the problems
What we face in teamwork is that there is no clear communication.

Poor communication is the reason for the breakdown of human relationships.

suitable for a Vision that can be defined in simple terms,
understandable and executable.
2. WE ARE A TEAM IF WE ALL KNOW WHERE WE ARE GOING AND WHAT
WE DO. Teamwork is possible when there is unity of
Purpose. The Team shares the same criteria and principles.
11)
Many times leaders do not know or do not want to communicate our vision to
those who are part of the Team. The Bible says, "Where there is no vision, the people
is lost.” (Prov. 29:18, NVI). It may be that we cannot communicate a vision
Clara, because we simply don't have it and the trend is to isolate ourselves.
The lack of unity in the purposes and plans we have makes it impossible for us to
working in a team. One of the most difficult things in church administration is
properly communicate our vision, then clearly articulate our mission
and finally establish objectives and goals that give to the members of the church and to
leaders have a clear sense of direction.
The people who were building the Tower of Babel "spoke the same language." This
it means that everyone knew what they wanted to achieve. It is interesting that they
They will eventually create new construction methodologies. They changed the use of

allowed to be innovative and choose better methods to achieve their goals and

How difficult it is in the church to establish common objectives and goals. In fact,

teaching, proclamation, etc. Everything was done under a divine plan.

how delightful it is when his people plan, organize, and execute the work of his Kingdom
under a clear and achievable plan. Having a vision, mission, common objectives, and goals
clarity allows us to work as a team. The most appropriate way to form
a Team is giving the Team a vision, a mission, and a clear and understandable plan, the
that everyone shares and everyone is passionate about it.
As a conclusion to these first two points based on the passage from Genesis 11.
podemos decir que Dios reconoce la capacidad de los seres humanos para hacer y
achieve things when they work together and communicate. When they understand each other and
they speak the same language. The results are unpredictable. Unfortunately
many times humans unite more to do bad than to do good
good.
In the case of Babel, the human aspiration was to reach the sky, to be like God,
to preserve a name and a tradition, to be against God's purpose of

God breaks the communication between them and they fail.
WE ARE A TEAM WHEN OUR STRENGTHS COMBINE.
a) The power of teamwork is demonstrated by the principle of the
Synergy (cooperation and/or integration) Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

of teamwork. We are better and have better results from our
work when we learn to work together. Two are better than one. Efficiency
teamwork is demonstrated by the principle of synergy which states that a

tons. The principle here is not an arithmetic sum but a geometric one. The
the multiplication of energy is geometrically greater when more than one
element participates. When the church understands this principle, teamwork
it is possible.
In teamwork, each team member contributes what they have. The sum of
capacities and skills are geometrically multiplied. There is no limit to what
we can achieve when we work as a team. It is important to repeat this, Teamwork

In the 21st century, it is required of pastors to be willing to form teams.
pastoral activities that make the church grow. However, many churches are
stopped and do not grow as the pastor has reached a limit of efficiency and less

b) The power of teamwork through mutual responsibility
prevent us from being defeated in the race.
“Woe to the one who falls and has no one to lift him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:10b NVI)
This is one of the saddest aspects of ministry and ecclesial life.
Unfortunately, many have better friends outside the church circle since
one cannot rely on another believer or church leader. It may be the case for you
it's different and you have people close to you, both in your church and in your
region, in which you can trust. Let me tell you that this is a treasure. The
the reality is that many times we do not trust another brother because we know that
if we tell or ask for advice, our problem will be known and criticized by
many.
If we remember the example of Jesus in Gethsemane, it is something remarkable (Matthew 26:36-
It is remarkable that Jesus was facing one of the greatest trials of
his ministry. The cross was in perspective, the curse of sin upon it. The
physical sacrifice of his death. He needed strength and withdrew to pray, but takes

to exist in a well-made knot. There are knots that do not withstand a strong pull. Not
however, when the knot is made properly, pulling on it will instead of
breaks, it solidifies. You can surely imagine in your mind the
famous knots of the 'boy scouts' or sailors. They are made so that instead of
unravel and break, they should withstand any tug. This is how unity must be
our team.
The more it is pulled, the more granite our unity and integration becomes. A detail of
the knots are not like a welding where metals are melted. In a
knot, the rope remains intact, however, the tie fuses it to the rest of the
folds of the rope. Nice illustration of how, in a Team, each one of us
we maintain our identity, however, we are tied to one another by

Summarizing what we have mentioned so far, we list the elements.
important things that are required to work in a team. First, we need a
effective communication, in two ways, which is the basis for carrying out the work in

the fulfillment of teamwork. Third, the principle of synergy gives us

multiply geometrically. Fourth, having a team ensures us that we can reach
unbroken and standing until the end of the race. Teamwork is the best way to
effective in reaching objectives and goals that go beyond the normal or conventional.
4. WE ARE A TEAM WHEN WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO
RELATING IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF HUMILITY, RESPECT AND
MUTUAL VALUATION.
a) Teamwork requires strategies suitable to the challenge that the
church faces. Obviously, this includes an assignment of
responsibilities according to the capabilities and skills of the
team members. (1 Chronicles 19:10-11).
The text says that 'seeing Joab that the attack against him had been arranged by the front and
from the rear, he chose from the most advanced ones in Israel, and with them he ordered.
his army against the Syrians." (Verse 10). "He then put the rest of the people under the command of
Abishai, his brother, and he ordered them into battle against the Ammonites.
In this biblical description, we see that Joab devises an appropriate strategy for
face the enemy that comes on two fronts. The principle of subdivision of
responsibilities are important here. Not all of us have to do everything. Some
some are good for something, others are good for other things. Each one has a
function in the body of Christ for which he is better prepared.
Accepting and putting that into practice is a matter of life or death. Many churches are
dying from lack of a proper division of responsibilities. Returning
In the context of our passage, Joab could not afford to go into battle first.
against the army that was in the field, which had 32,000 chariots with their
soldiers and then go back to rescue the city that would surely already be
taken by the other Ammonite army. It was time to trust another member of his
army and give it the authority and empowerment to take action itself
level that it would take.
THE KEY IS TO SUBDIVIDE THE FUNCTIONS. EACH OF US WILL DO
WHAT WE ARE BEST AT DOING.
Joab knew it was crucial to hand part of the task over to his brother.
and he himself takes the other part. Interesting that he, as a general, takes the section.

that he goes with the elite of David's army. The REST, that is to say the other soldiers.
rags, which, according to my speculation, would be more in number, would be with the
second in rank in the army, Commander Abisai.
It is interesting to note that the subdivision of responsibilities did not exempt Joab from
take action. In fact, as a leader, I needed to set an example in action.
When the leader goes to the front, the people are encouraged. If the church is going to be strong in
prayer, the leader must be strong in prayer. If the church is to be strong in the
praise and worship, the leader needs to be a worshiper. If the church is to be
Evangelistic and missionary, the pastor is the key for that to happen.
I find it striking that it says that they 'ordered them into battle against the Ammonites,'
that he surely considered the weakest army and how General, according to the
verse 10 would go against the Syrians, that is, the strongest and most armed army that
he was coming against them. The pastor, like a general of his army, needs to be a strategist and
define where and where you will put your efforts and your people to do the task that
has to do. Many times we concentrate too many resources on one part of
our task as a church, for example praise and worship, and we neglect
the word, the sentence, the fasting, the evangelism. All these elements are
necessary and we cannot neglect them in favor of a single element in the church.
5. Teamwork requires a personal attitude stripped of everything.
pride and selfishness that recognizes the value and place of others
members of the Work Team. 1 Chronicles 19:10-13.
At this point, it is important to quote Joab's words to his brother literally.
I find here one of the most powerful messages about the way in which the
Leaders must delegate to our team members and empower them in such a way
so that what they do, they do with the full certainty that they will be
winners and have no fear against the enemy. Joab said: 'If the Syrians
if they are stronger than me, you will help me; and if the Ammonites are stronger than you, I
I will help you" (Verse 12).
HOW GOOD IT IS TO HAVE A BROTHER WHO WATCHES MY BACK!
The one who is speaking was a five-star general, a man of great courage and
military career tested. He had chosen the elite of David's army and had not
no reason, humanly speaking, for me to tell his younger brother,
army commander, lower in rank and experience, if the enemies that
he would face, the Syrians, were stronger than him, that please would come to
help.
It was illogical what was happening. The normal thing would be for his brother to say to him: look
little brother, I know that the Ammonites are strong and they may defeat you. Don't you
Don't worry, I will be there to help you. Although I don't believe it, just in case.
they are about to expire, please come help me. However, what we found in the
Joab's attitude is a combination of humility, wisdom, cleverness, and a gesture.
of vulnerability that would have several effects:
First, I gave a message to my younger brother: little brother, you are so good at
the war that I might need your help. I mean, I am so sure that you
you will win the battle against the Ammonites and you will still have strength to come to
help me. If something is relevant in a leader, it is that they make the members feel
your team that without their support, the battle may be lost. Empowering to
Those who are under our responsibility is one of the most difficult things.
It is not easy to give authority to others. Even more, it is not easy to trust things that
are crucial in the hands of others, Joab was with his attitude empowering his
brother telling him, brother, I trust so much in your fighting ability that I know that if
I cannot defeat my enemies, you will come to help me.
The other message found here is one of humility. A man of stature

He was saying: I am not so powerful that I do not need your help.

I am sinking, lend me your hand and pull me out of the water. Don't let me fall,
thinking that I don't need you and that somehow I will be able to get out, since I am
Who am I? No, that wasn't the message! The message was one of vulnerability.
Becoming vulnerable is to remove the masks of supermen or super leaders and
show us humans.
The Lord Jesus Christ was different, he became vulnerable. When he was sad about the
the death of his friend Lazarus, he cried, when he was hungry, he asked them to buy for him
food. When he was distressed, he asked to be accompanied in prayer. When

like God and at the same time was not afraid to reveal his humanity since he was sure
where he came from, who he was and whom he served. This is powerfully manifested
especially when he washes the feet of his disciples. This powerful act of the
Mr. Jesus was like the seal of his teachings.
A leader who knows who they are in the Lord, who has a clear vision of God and is
sure of his calling and of the mission that the Lord has entrusted to him, he never has
fear of showing humility and vulnerability to their disciples or team members.
This leader knows that the one who has him where he is, is God. He has not arrived there by
human will but because the Lord has placed him there and there is nothing and no one
that I can remove it from that place.
The opposite occurs with a leader insecure about their calling, their authority, and their ...
place in the Lord. Generally, this leader will be defensive, offensive, and zealous;
fearful that someone might take him out of his place or move his chair. Show a
often an arrogant and proud attitude. That is what it really hides in that
insecurity. If I know that I am where God wants me to be, there is nothing or
no one who can move me from there.
Returning to our main passage and summarizing what we mentioned about the
Joab's attitude shows great confidence in his leadership and tremendous
humility that helps empower his brother to face great challenges
what lay ahead. A nice example of the attitude of a true leader who
knows who he is in the Lord.
The other notable aspect of this story is the second part of verse 12, when
Joab says to Abishai, 'and if the Ammonites are stronger than you, I will help you'.
(verse 12b). What a tremendous guarantee and confidence was being created in the heart of
Abisai. His brother not only trusted him and considered him a capable person, but
I was also telling him. Brother, if you need my help, count on me.
I trust in your ability, but if for any reason I see you being defeated, there
I will be with you, I will not leave you. I will come to help you.
Again, HOW GOOD IT IS TO HAVE A BROTHER WHO HAS MY BACK! No

Unfortunately, the reality seems to be different in the church.
Betrayal, envy, and the unchecked desire for power and control lead to the

Team to have people in whom we can trust and people whom
We can trust. The most difficult thing for a leader is not to trust those who
they are being part of their Team.
In order to work as a team, we need several things according to this: first,
we need to be humble and make ourselves vulnerable to our peers
team. Pride and the pretense of sufficiency are the worst enemies of a good
team. The leader must be an example of trust and have confidence in their leaders.
The leader must assign tasks to their team members that usually only
he could develop them. That gives team members the confidence that they
They are important and their leader trusts them.
No team is formed nor new ministries are encouraged unless we
let us be willing to deposit trust and to empower others at work
Ministerial. Pastors, Supervisors, Leaders, we need to empower others through
of an intentional and conscious process in which those under our leadership
let them feel that they are important, capable, and that we trust them.
Teamwork is possible only when the leader is able to empower others and
he is there to support and encourage members when they face
problems. It's nice to know that I have a brother, a companion that
care for my back and is willing to trust me, believes in me, gives me
to do things that generally only he can do.
V. WE CAN WORK AS A TEAM WHEN WE ARE CLEAR THAT WE DO NOT
WE WORK FOR OUR OWN KINGDOM BUT FOR THE KINGDOM OF
GOD.
All effort made is not for personal gain but for
to benefit the Kingdom of God and his church. (Verse 13a).
Joab tells his brother, 'Be strong and let us strengthen ourselves for our people and for
the cities of our God. Obviously Joab was clear that the freedom of the
the people of Israel was at stake. King David had entrusted him with a task and
now he sealed his team and empowerment strategy, establishing a
action philosophy that elevated war from a merely individualistic level to
a communal dimension. Brother, this is not our business, it's a matter of our
people. They are our people because we belong to them and that people has
entrusted the task of defending them.
The other thing is that Joab says, we will fight for the cities of our God. The people,
it was their village, not because the village belonged to them, but rather, because
they belonged to that town. But in the case of the cities, they were the cities
of God. This is a very deep concept. In Joab's heart it was clear that
they were not defending something that was solely theirs but something that belonged to their
God. It was not that we would fight for our cities, but rather for the cities of
our God. Clear understanding of to whom things belong.
How many times in the ministry do we see the church as property, as

with his blood. The church is not my church, nor is it the church of the National Supervisor, or
the Territorial Supervisor, or the Pastor or the Leaders. No, the church belongs to
Jesus Christ because He bought it with His blood. When we have that clear, not
we subjugate, we do not mistreat or take advantage of his church. On the contrary, the
we care, nurture, and share honestly so that when the day comes
redemption, we may lift up clean hands.
Finally, Joab concludes by saying, 'Let the Lord do what seems good to Him.'

to do what he wants. Nice attitude of recognition that truly battles it.
it would depend neither on the general with his two armies, nor on the military capacity of the
armies. They were really at a great disadvantage.
The outcome of this battle was astonishing. The Syrians, with their chariots and their people
on horseback, they flee before Joab. What happened, how it happened, what did Joab do
we do not know. What we know is that the almighty supported the strategy, the
attitude and the spirit of these faithful warriors, and I fought for them. The Ammonites

next, the attitude of those who make up the army and especially the attitude of their
leaders.
THE BODY TEACHES US TO WORK IN HARMONY
Here it is relevant to mention one of the fundamental doctrines of the church.
What Paul taught us, when referring to the unity of the church; that is, that the church
it is the Body of Christ. According to 1 Corinthians 12, the church is compared to a body
with many members. All the members are part of the same body. He desires
that your people be united and let us work as one body. However, in that
in unity there is diversity of members and functions; therefore it is necessary to put a
stop the divisions, the competitions, the pride and individualism.
If the deacon said, because I am not an evangelist, I am not from the church, is that why not

PRINCIPLES FOR WORKING IN HARMONY
1. Working as one body requires Humility Rom. 12:3-8
The Apostle Paul urges us to think of ourselves with sound judgment (the opposite
of madness). That is to say, without exaggerating one's own value, but in a moderate manner,
sober, balanced; in accordance with what each one has received. It is not about
to think of oneself with contempt (I am nobody, I am good for nothing) but neither
with pride (I am the best, the most capable, the unparalleled). The gifts
what God has given us can be a source of pride. However, each
Cristiano must remember that they have been given by grace (gift).
If there is something that causes problems in teams, it is the
arrogant attitudes. There are people who praise themselves for their knowledge.
and abilities, humiliating others who do not have them. That is why no one should
to consider oneself superior to another, just as in the human body, all of us
we need each other.
2. Working as a body implies mutual dependence 1st Cor. 12:15-21
In the human body, all members need each other to function.
Good. This is the body of Christ, we all need each other because each one serves a purpose.
a different labor that complements the other. When the body is lacking a
member, the other organs must strive doubly to compensate, from
some way that function. We all need each other.
Body of Christ, no one should think that it is unnecessary because God himself
took care of giving it a place in her body.
But now God has placed the members, each one of them in the church, as
he wanted. Because if everyone did the same, where would the church be? Like this
that neither the prophets can say to the deacons I do not need them, nor do the...
pastors can say to evangelists and missionaries I have no need to
you. Rather, those members who seem to be the least deserving in
the church, which cannot give much money, but prays and fasts for it
Pastor, the leaders and the church, these are also necessary.
3. Working as a body means valuing one another Verses 22-25
We all have gifts and therefore, we are all important and interconnected.
one another. No gift makes me superior to others, it is only about
fulfill different functions. It is true that some gifts stand out more than
others, but it is also necessary to have those who go unnoticed.
In the body we have more fragile members, but that does not imply that they are
unnecessary; on the contrary, we protect them and take care of them more.
care
If it is about worth, in the Body of Christ, we are all valuable; therefore,
There should be no jealousy, pride, etc. but appreciation, concern, and mutual help.
4. Working as one body denotes Variety and Unity 1st Cor. 12:26-27
Just as the body has different members with different functions, so God
has endowed believers with different abilities. The diversity of the body
it has been planned by God to keep us united. The variety in the Body
of Christ does not indicate that one is better than the other, but that each one has different
function and thus we complement each other. When we are aware that everyone
we are useful in the body we set aside differences, divisions and
lawsuits; to work together in an environment of cooperation and harmony. In
instead of focusing on ourselves, we will worry about complementing
and build up others. In other words, in the Body of Christ there must be
absence of selfishness.
5. Working as a body implies mutual benefit Ephesians 4:11-16
God has endowed us with various abilities and has given us a specific function in His
body. However, everything has been given for profit (1st Cor. 12:7). That is, the
capabilities are not given for personal gain but for the benefit of the Church
(Eph. 4:12). The purpose of all leadership is to 'perfect', which means
empower, equip, instruct all members of the church for the work in
the Work of the Lord. So, whatever gift God has given us,
we must exercise it so that the other members of the church are edified and not
to boast before others because that is not the divine purpose.
CONCLUSION:
Teamwork is finally possible when we are clear that we do not work
for our own kingdom and our own interests, but we work for the
Kingdom of God. The rest of the work will be done by the Lord. After all, everything that
what we do in your church depends directly on His hand. Teamwork
it is the most effective way to achieve objectives and goals that are out of the ordinary or
conventional.
