Introduction:
Since its beginnings as a recognized science, linguistics
has greatly diversified into the five fields of study
mainly, and traditional ones such as phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, this
last is interested in the study of meaning that refers to
linguistics, the meaning of an expression (word, phrase,
phrase, statement that is to say the idea associated with it also called
denotation or connotation.
What is denotation?
and connotation?
Definition:
❖ Denotation is defined as the semantic aspect.
stable means everything that is common to all
language users. The denotative meaning represents the
part of the meaning of a lexical unit that is
consisting of the set of stable traits, non
subjective and analyzable outside discourse, the denotation
being the basic meaning of a word.
Connotation:
The term connotation belongs to vocabulary and all
the linguists, stylisticians, and semioticians, but not one of them
defined in the same way.
➢ A wholly negative definition, by R. Barthes <<the
Connotations are meanings that are not in grammar.
of the language in which the text is written>> (S/Z p:15)
➢ A definition of Martinet that accumulates the
vague formulations: <<everything that this term can evoke,
suggest / excite, involve in clear or vague ways
for each of the users.
➢ For Georges Mounin: << The connotations are precisely the
elements that are on the fringe of the signified, link the signifier to the
the most concretely individual situations experienced by the speaker.
➢ At Bloomfield, the term connotation is taken as a value.

emotional values called superstitions.
➢ For Saussurean school, the denotation of the sign is its function

in its classic philosophical sense, denotation is the
reference to an object and the connotation the whole of
its significant attributes.
❑ Example:
In the very famous poem by
Baudelaire (The Outsider) the contextual meaning of the word
<<foreigner>> exceeds the usual referential meaning.

History of the term connotation:
According to the quote by George Mounin, 'The word connotation...'
find is an old term of scholastic logic, like the word
denotation, linguistics does not admit them
jointly in its most recent terminology >> we observe
that the history of the notion of connotation dates back to
scholastics with whom she approaches the notion of understanding.
For them, the term 'connotation' opposes 'denotation.'
synonym of extension.
Before entering the field of linguistics, the term
connotation becomes a term of logic for the first time with
John Stuart Mill, (Logic in 1843), and 'a value'

In linguistics, the term "connotation" is almost ambiguous, because
that the way linguists talk about connotation is very
different, it's in chapter 22 of the Prolegomena to a theory of
language. 1943 by Hjelmslev, titled: Language of connotation and M
languages, what notion connotation is defined the first time,
in an explicit manner.
Hjelmslev is the first to formulate rigorously the
the issue of the phenomenon of connotation. It talks about
connotative language whose expression plan
is itself formed by a language.
During the sixties, other linguists such as
Georges Mounin (1963). B. Pottier and André Martinet (1967)
conduct studies on connotation.
Georges Mounin dedicates a chapter of his work.
theoretical problems of Translation to the question of
connotation. He analyzes the different definitions already made
and defines connotation as an <<Atmosphere
affective >> which envelops words and takes in
consideration of the relationship between each sign and each
speaker individually...
Characters of connotations:
We have four characteristic traits:

they are the ones that create his wealth, his liveliness. The text touches
the speaker's imagination and their ability to analyze.
Opposition/Complementarity:
Connotation and Denotation: Two notions that are
thus complementary. The opposition of connotation
and denotation are criteria for determining the
